  • It's a Even Week!
  • Take 2: Test Text on October 1 at 4 p.m. - The test text didn't go as planned. We're making adjustments and going to try again on Thursday, October 1 at 4 p.m. If you have a mobile number listed as part of your record, you should receive a test text message that reads “Greetings from Iowa Law. This is a test message. Have a good afternoon!” This system will be used only when we have information we need to convey to you urgently or on short notice that is specific to the law community or the Boyd Law Building. When you receive the text, please add our number to your phone as “Iowa Law.” Thank you!
  • SAVE THE DATE: Mental Health Awareness Week - On behalf of ISBA, GPSG, and OWLSS, we present to you Mental Health Awareness Week at Iowa Law. As racial injustice and the pandemic continues in addition to the stresses associated with law school, we hope that our law school community can come together and support each other’s mental health and well-being during these hard times.
We will be posting on our organizations' Facebook pages every day during the week of October 5th about mental health awareness and advocacy. Each day will be centered around a different theme. On October 6th, we will have a panel of law faculty members and alumni discussing the mental health stigma for law students and lawyers. On October 8th, Jaret Morlan, LMSW, Staff Therapist at the College of Law, will present on coping strategies related to dealing with mental health during COVID-19. Look out for more information next week!

  • October 5 -  OWLSS is excited to announce our upcoming event: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Legal Profession. This virtual panel will be held on Monday, October 5 from 1 to 2 p.m. via Zoom. Throughout our country's history and particularly during the summer of 2020, we have seen atrocious acts of violence against people of color. Although the social media posts, protests, and other acts of support throughout the summer were integral to the support of the Black Lives Matter movement, the momentum and conversations about racial injustice must continue. Join us for an open, candid conversation about diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession, and what actionable steps and support we can provide in promoting diversity in the legal community. Our panelists for this event include:
    • Carrington Buze, Judicial Law Clerk for the Iowa Supreme Court
    • Paulina Escobar, Associate at Stinson LLP
    • Neda Barrett, Staff Chair for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
    • Dean Adrien Wing, Associate Dean for International and Comparative Law
Please submit your questions for the panelists through this form. You can access the webinar via Zoom here. This event is co-sponsored by the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee and the Career Services
  • October 6: Legal Theory Reading Group: Privacy and "Digital Disease Surveillance," 5:30 p.m. at the Zoom School of Law and Philosophy! (link sent to those who register), Sign up here How do you beat COVID? You need contact tracing. Contact tracing needs good data. Good data needs surveillance. But there's a hitch... a little thing called the Fourth Amendment. Can effective contact tracing work within people's reasonable expectations of privacy? Join the next Legal Theory Reading Group (“LTRG,” pronounced “liturgy”) to discuss! We will use Alan Z. Rozenshtein’s, “Digital Disease Surveillance,” as a basis for discussion: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3698431

Newcomers always welcome! At each LTRG meeting, we discuss a recent work tackling contemporary issues in legal theory. Professors Diamantis (law), Davidovic (philosophy), and Hasan (philosophy) will entertain you with provocative discussion prompts and stupid human tricks. Meetings are low key and friendly. The whole point is to have fun! The only expectation is that you come prepared to discuss. Contact mihailis-diamantis@uiowa.edu with any questions.
