- Fund for Student Organizations - This last summer Dean Washburn created a fund for student organizations of $150 (per organization), for the Fall 2021 semester to be used for food. This fund is intended to encourage students to socialize in person in efforts for community-building inside the law school. Please feel free to reach out to Angie (angela-mcmullin@uiowa.edu) or Tania (angela-mcmullin@uiowa.edu) if you have any questions or need some ideas on how to use the "food funds."
Native American Law Students Association
- The Native American Law Students Association will be holding an “Open House” meeting for all interested law students to stop by and discuss insights and curiosities surrounding Native American Law. Dean Washburn and the NALSA team will be in attendance to answer any questions pertaining to the organization and/or current issues in this area of the law. NALSA is an organization open for all students and is dedicated to creating a supportive community for anyone interested in Native American Legal issues. We encourage you to stop by if you’re curious about these issues and want to learn more about this area of the law! Citizen Lawyer Program
- Reporting Service Hours
All Iowa Law students are encouraged to record all hours spent in public service while they are enrolled at Iowa Law via Symplicity. Service hours must be voluntary, uncompensated, and not compelled (ie, not required for a course or a student organization). Hours are divided into two general categories. Community Hours are those that directly benefit recognized community organizations or non-profits, including pro bono projects organized by the Citizen Lawyer Program. Institutional Hours are those that benefit the law school, university, or a student group. Service hours are not limited to activities organized through the law school or locally-based; students can record their volunteer work with non-profits, faith communities, and political organizations regardless of location.
Iowa Law’s Pro Bono Society honors students who have completed 15 hours of service, at least 7.5 of which are Community Hours, and attended at least one Lawyers & Leaders program in the previous semester. The Boyd Service Award is bestowed at graduation on students who have completed a total of at least 100 service hours, at least 50 of which are Community Hours, throughout their law school career. The Pro Bono Society Constitution, which establishes these honors, is available HERE .
- CLP Fall 2021 Office Hours - Citizen Lawyer Program staff will be available every Tuesday from 11:00am-1:00pm in the Boyd Law lobby and every Thursday from 1:00-2:00pm via Zoom this semester to answer questions about pro bono projects, volunteer opportunities, service honors recognitions, and more!
- For Thursday Zoom office hours, Iowa Law students can enter the waiting room using this Zoom link. Please log into Zoom using your HawkID and password. Please remember to report your service within a month or the date of service via Symplicity HERE.
Equal Justice Foundation
- Auction Announcement: The Annual Equal Justice Foundation Auction will take place on October 29, at 6 pm, at the Celebration Farm in Iowa City. Come in formal attire and enjoy appetizers, drinks, and auction items from local businesses and donated experiences by professors!
- Attention 1Ls: Are you interested in public interest work? Do you enjoy engaging with the community? Are you interested in getting more involved within Boyd? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Equal Justice Foundation (EJF) wants you to apply for a 1L Representative position!
- EJF provides financial support to Iowa Law students by operating a low-cost used textbook store and hosting its annual Public Interest Auction. EJF then awards the money it raises to students who take summer internships in low or unpaid public interest positions, such as nonprofit or government work. These scholarships help students cover costs of living while they contribute to the public sector in this manner. As a 1L Representative, you will collaborate with the EJF Board to continue innovating its Bookstore and Public Auction, all in the name of raising more money and supporting more students. It's also an excellent resume boost and an early opportunity to develop get hands-on organization operating experience.
