Arts and humanities faculty: Secure a spring 2026 AHI grant

The Arts and Humanities Initiative (AHI) awards grants support creative and scholarly work that advances humanist principles for spring 2026 are now open. Scholars can receive up to $7,500 for a standard grant and up to $30,000 for a major project grant.

Apply by March 10.

Indicate your interest in restricted-use datasets by Jan. 31

The University of Iowa's Center for Social Science Innovation (CSSI) and OVPR are exploring the renewal of an institutional membership with the Central Plains Federal Statistical Research Data Center (CPRDC).
  • Qualified UI researchers can access restricted-use federal datasets available through the U.S. Census Bureau.
  • To access this secure data, UI researchers must physically visit the Iowa FSRDC in Ames.

Nabhan-Warren; Salem recognized as leaders in their fields

Two associate vice presidents (AVPs) for research have recently been recognized as leaders in their respective fields:  

Kristy Nabhan-Warren, AVP of research and professor and Figge Chair in Catholic Studies, was elected as the 2027 President of the American Catholic Historical Association. 

Aliasger Salem, AVP of research and Lyle and Sharon Bighley Endowed Chair and professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences, was named among the "World’s Top 2% Scientists" by Stanford University, along with other UI faculty members.

UI wins $1.5 million to accelerate materials science research

The University of Iowa has won nearly $1.5 million to expand its materials science center and to explore new ways to leverage materials for quantum technologies.

The locus of the research will be at the MATFab Facility, which was created by the OVPR to centralize the university’s advanced micro-nanofabrication research. The facility, housed in 1,500 square feet of clean room space at the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories, has deposition and etching tools for building structures at the micro and nanoscale.

The annual Iowa Art in Science Contest recognizes the combination of outstanding scientific discovery and artistic appeal inherent to microscopy research. It is supported by the Central Microscopy Research Facility.

UI undergrad places third in science video competition

The Science Coalition Alyse Gray Parker Memorial Student Video Challenge encourages students to share basic scientific research means to them and the nation.

Hiruni Sumanasiri took third place in the undergraduate category for highlighting her work on ovarian and endometrial cancer research at the University of Iowa's Thiel Lab.
