Complete your Conflict of Interest annual disclosure by April 30

The University of Iowa Conflict of Interest in Research policy requires faculty, staff, and students engaged in research to submit an annual disclosure of outside professional activities and interests. Researchers identified as “key personnel” must complete this requirement by April 30. 

Researchers conducting federally funded research also must complete Conflict of Interest (COI) training within the eCOI portal. At the request of UI researchers, a certificate is now available upon completion of this training.

Updates to student principal investigator human subjects research training

At the request of UI faculty and departments that mentor student principal investigators (PIs), the student PI training has been updated. The training provides a high-level overview of how to use HawkIRB, outlines PI responsibilities, and emphasizes good research practices.

All student PIs must complete this training before submitting an IRB application for review.

Jessica Calarco, Ida Beam visiting professor, reading 7 p.m. April 23

Jessica Calarco, a 2025–26 Ida Beam Distinguished Visiting Professor, will read from her new book, Holding It Together: How Women Became America’s Safety Net, at Prairie Lights Books. Following the reading, Jennifer Haylett, associate professor of instruction in sociology, will moderate a conversation and public Q&A.

Conflict and Resolution, an Obermann Wide Lens event, 4 p.m. May 6

This Wide Lens event brings together faculty from sociology and criminology, journalism, biology, theatre, political science, and education to explore how conflict is lived, studied, and expressed.

MATFab Materials Frontier Symposium, April 24

Learn how the University of Iowa Materials Analysis, Testing, and Fabrication (MATFab) Facility supports cutting-edge research in materials science. This event features workshops on industry-academic partnerships and the use of laser ablation and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for quantitative elemental mapping, as well as a student poster session.
