Hayley Harvey

Hayley Harvey ('94 DDS, '96 MS) receives Distinguished Alumni Award

As section chief and director of dental education at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa, Hayley Harvey ('94 DDS, '96 MS) has been a champion for increasing access to dental care and improving the oral health of underserved. She will be recognized for her service during Homecoming festivities this week.

College of Dentistry Welcomed President Barbara Wilson

On October 4, the College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics was honored to welcome UI President Barb Wilson and show her the amazing work going on at the college. She began the day speaking with the executive leadership team of the college, and then she had lunch with dental students. After her visit, she made a Facebook post highlighting the large number of dental specialties that Iowa has, ten in total.

Valerie Waterhouse Receives 2021 UI Staff Award for Customer Service

Valerie Waterhouse, a dental assistant III in the Department of Family Dentistry, manages a team of assistants in both the Family Dentistry faculty practice and fourth-year student auxiliary clinical practice.  Among other duties, she assists faculty and students in direct patient care and completes associated laboratory work. Waterhouse also played a vital role in patient care during the early stages of the pandemic. The Department of Family Dentistry hosted a luncheon reception on October 5 for Waterhouse's staff award, Heather Heddens' 2020 Dental Alumnus of the Year Award, and Ana Diaz Arnold's 2021 Dental Educator of the Year Award.  

Cari Anderson

Cari Anderson Receives 2021 UI Outstanding Staff Award

Cari Anderson, director of dental counseling and wellness support services in the College of Dentistry and Division of Student Life, has elevated awareness around mental health in the broader dental school culture. She has developed unique programming to champion mental wellness, including Body Image Week, Suicide Prevention Week, and Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Week. She created the Student Advisory Board to advocate for the student body, facilitate outreach, and further promote awareness and was named a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Change Agent honoree earlier this year. In addition, she has established workshops, trainings, and support networks for various student groups. According to fourth-year dental student Kobi Voshell, "This prestigious award brings attention to the truly remarkable work that is being done in the college. I know as a student I am lucky to have such outstanding staff and faculty to support my education here." 

Donald C. Ostrus

Donald C. Ostrus (’48 BA, ’50 DDS)

Iowa native and a devoted supporter of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Donald C. Ostrus (’48 BA, ’50 DDS) died on September 26, 2021 at his home with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. He was 100 years old, and it was through his generosity and support that the Ostrus Prosthodontics Clinic at the University of Iowa was renovated and expanded. Dean Emeritus David Johnsen said, "Don was a rare person who was highly accomplished professionally and projected boundless kindness with everyone he met. He loved the College of Dentistry and these were HIS Hawkeyes!" A memorial service for Ostrus will be held on October 17 at 2:00 p.m. (PDT), and information about livestreaming the service is including in his obituary

Flu Shot

Flu Shots at Dental Pharmacy

The Dental Pharmacy is offering influenza shots from 8:30-5:00 every Tuesday to staff, students, and the public.  If you have insurance through Iowa Wellmark BCBS, we can process your vaccination through your insurance and there is no copay.  We are currently unable to take other insurance plans.  Cash charge for the shot is $30 vs. $62 charged by the University.  If interested, please feel free to e-mail me at Cindy-Marek@uiowa.edu and I can send you the vaccine questionnaire/insurance form ahead of time to optimize convenience.  We will provide a sheet with complete instructions on how to enter the info into your ReadySet account and look forward to seeing you!
