Reminder: Flu Vaccine Campaign ends on December 1, 2023

As a reminder, employees and volunteers are required to participate in the campaign. You must receive the influenza vaccine (from the University Employee Health Clinic or elsewhere) or decline it in ReadySet in order to comply.

Peds Reception Desk - New Number

The Pediatric reception desk has a new number and a new occupant! You'll see Walter Donich sitting up front as you enter the Level 2 Boyd Tower pediatric office suite.

The new number is 319-356-7250 or 67250 when calling internally.

Congratulations to Courtney Kremer, ARNP on the arrival of her son, Finn Douglas Kremer. Finn was born on October 2, 2023, and weighed 6 lbs. 8 oz. Congrats Courtney!

Holiday Donation Drives

Peds for Toys for Tots

As a reminder, the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is participating in the Toys for Tots toy collection drive. Drop off new, unwrapped toys at one of our drop sites. The deadline for collection is Friday, December 8, 2023. Drop sites can be found in the following locations: 

  • Peds Admin Reception Desk (BT 2001)
  • First-floor lobby by the check-in desks in the CDD

Winter Clothing Drive

The Iowa City and University of Iowa Police Departments are hosting a winter clothing drive, and are accepting new or gently used winter clothing. Donations sites are located throughout the Iowa City Community and can be dropped off until Friday, December 1, 2023.

Community members in need of winter clothing can pick up their items on Saturday, December 2, 2023, from 12:00 - 5:00 p.m. at the Mercer Park Aquatic Center

Highlights from Pediatric Clinics

Where a COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic Succeeds for Kids with Sensory Issues

This past year, members of the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) at University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital launched a clinic to overcome sensory disorder issues to deliver COVID-19 vaccinations to nearly 30 children - something they continued doing this fall with the flu vaccine. Differences in Sex Development (DSD) Clinic Opens

Akhila Ramakrishna, MD has worked diligently with several other pediatric sub-specialties to create the region's first clinic for children with DSD. Dr. Ramakrishna has partnered with pediatric urologist Gina Lockwood, MD, and clinical psychologist Laura Fuller, PhD to create the Iowa Gender Multi-Specialty (iGeMS) clinic. The clinic works to maximize the physical and emotional health of youth with DSD, using a multidisciplinary approach. Read more about this new clinic HERE!

Peds Faculty Featured in Top-Tier Journals

Pediatric researchers, among other UI Health Care researchers, are collaborating across the nation and the world to advance science and medicine.

Alex Bassuk, MD, PhD was part of a multi-institutional team led by Stanford University that used liquid biopsy proteomics and artificial intelligence (AI) to identify cellular drivers of aging and diseases in the eyes. The study was published on October 19, 2023, in Cell.

Damian Krysan, MD, PhD, led a team of UI researchers and colleagues at University of Georgia in a study examining how disease-causing strains of the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans adapt to survive inside human hosts. The findings were published on October 18, 2023, in Nature Communications.

Sharing the Benefits of Research at the Hawk-IDDRC

Lane Strathearn, MBBS, PhD, FRACP, recently led a session at the 2023 Iowa Regents Disability Summit in Iowa City, where he and others discussed how research at the Hawk-IDDRC (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center) can benefit from patients and families. 

Established in 2021 by Ted Abel, PhD, director of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute, the Hawk-IDDRC is one of only 15 federally funded IDDRCs in the country.

Grant Renewal will Support Work to Expand Mental Health Care to Iowa Children and Adolescents

The federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently awarded a three-year, $2.25 million grant to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HSS) to expand mental health care capabilities serving Iowa's youth.

Specialists in the UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics and its Division of Child and Community Health will contract with Iowa HSS to lead initiatives focused on workforce development, support for Iowa's primary care providers, training on evidence-based therapies, and school-based mental health services.
