- Issues faced by individuals with various forms of disabilities in a health care setting
- How to effectively respond to patient-initiated harassment
- Health Care disparities and how to mitigate them
For health care faculty and staff who are interested in becoming more actively involved in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts and learning from local experts, enrollment is now open for the UI Health Care BUILD program. Sessions will be held Wednesdays, January 11 - February 15. | | | Bridging the gap for underrepresented students in medicine The Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) provides support for students underrepresented in medicine as they pursue careers in health care. This summer, CCOM hosted 80 scholars at the annual Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP). These scholars - college freshmen and sophomores from across the country and the world - are from backgrounds considered underrepresented in medicine, including students from rural areas, low-income backgrounds, ethnic and racial minorities, and first-general students. SHPEP scholars can choose to focus their learning on medicine, dentistry, public health, or pharmacy. Students in the medical track get face time with physicians from varied specialties and opportunities to explore areas of medicine through hands-on learning.
The next obstacle these scholars have to overcome is preparing for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Denise Martinez, MD, Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Interim Associate VP for Health Parity, along with a generous donor, collaborated on a way to help underrepresented students achieve the MCAT scores they need.
"The cost to do an MCAT prep course is often $5,000," Martinez says. "The free prep course is just a way for us to continue to help the students we are already connect with through SHPEP." | | | | Recreation Membership Incentive Program UI employees have the opportunity to earn an incentive worth 50 percent of their monthly recreation membership fee (monthly membership = $39/month; incentive = $19.50/month) by participating in the liveWELL Personal Health Assessment (PHA) survey and using campus recreation facilities at least four times per month. Visit the Recreational Services website for information on facilities, member services, and fitness programs/classes.
