ESA Newsletter - May 2025

It's time to dust off your Vitamin C CDs, Epi.

As we wrap up the whirlwind year, the outgoing ESA board passes the baton (and maybe a few to-do lists) to the bright new team ready to take flight.

To those who missed the end-of-year picnic: there was sunshine, fruit salad (yummy yummy), and, oh yeah—a 30-minute faculty jam session. No notes, no regrets (except maybe yours).

This summer, rest deeply, stay safe, and make sure at least one person knows you’re okay, even if just okay. For Mental Health Awareness Month, we offer not a fix, but a reminder:

You are allowed to be a work in progress and a force for good at the same time.

Before you head out, take a moment to complete the University’s student survey on satisfaction, belonging, and financial wellbeing. Your voice helps shape what’s next!

Spotlight Corner

A professional headshot of a smiling Dr. Chrischilles in a suit is superimposed over a painting backdrop, with a miniature version of her posed inside a Bob Ross-style landscape on an easel.

Faculty: Dr. Betsy Chrischilles

She’s cleaned more claims data than most of us have cleaned our apartments—and still finds time for drawing classes and misty hikes in Ireland.

From mentoring with a nod to Virgil Hancher to helping shape federal drug safety systems, Dr. Chrischilles is proof that quiet influence often makes the loudest impact—read on to see how her artful approach to epidemiology leaves a lasting mark.

Students: Class of 2025

You’ve seen them in class, at events, and leading change. But can you recognize them as kids?

We're celebrating our graduates by highlighting their "why"—or the purpose that grounds them when the path ahead is unclear—alongside the projects that shaped their journey and the faces (past and present) behind the impact.

2025-2026 ESA Board

From scuba certification and stand-up comedy to clinical trials and childhood nutrition, this year’s newly elected ESA Executive Board brings a whole new meaning to “well-rounded.”

These students aren’t just leading the charge—they’re mapping the course with molecular assays, radio scripts, SEER data, and more. Get to know the new team steering our department forward.

Holding Space

Bold white text reading “Summer Events (outside of work hours, of course)” pops against a vibrant green grass background.

A summary of May’s heritage months, health awareness campaigns, and global observances including Memorial Day and World No Tobacco Day.

May, June, July, & August Heritage, Identity, Awareness, and Holy Days

This condensed table merges various public health-related awareness dates with the BMindFul Holy Dates Planner to provide key dates for cultural, religious, and historical awareness throughout the year.

"BMindful does not include all religious holy days. It focuses on three major holy days for each faith — days when faith members may choose not to go to work or send their children to school."
