Annual Policy Reminder: Compliance with Iowa law eliminating DEI programming and initiatives
The University of Iowa is committed to upholding state and federal laws while fostering an environment of equal opportunity for all community members.
Policy Overview
Effective July 1, 2025, Iowa Code Chapter 261J (Senate File 2435) limits the establishment and funding of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) activities at public universities. As a state institution, the University of Iowa is required to comply with this law.
Key Requirements of the Law
The law prohibits the university from:
- Creating or maintaining DEI offices
- Funding DEI programming or training
- Hiring staff to support DEI initiatives
- Using state or university funds for DEI purposes unless required by federal law
Activities permitted under the law include:
- Teaching and academic research
- Registered student organization activities or events
- Short-term guest speakers
- Licensed mental or physical health services
How the University Complies
University offices, programs, and practices have been eliminated to align with the law. Courses, research, and student activities continue as permitted.
