Center for Teaching Newsletter: August 2023

Supporting excellence in teaching and learning at Iowa

Hello, and welcome to the first edition of the Center for Teaching Newsletter.

This monthly newsletter is for anyone at the University of Iowa who wants to help advance teaching and learning excellence at our institution. Our goal is to help you stay informed about new and ongoing opportunities within the Center for Teaching, as well as provide a medium for university educators to engage in the conversation about higher education teaching practices on campus and beyond.

Each newsletter may also include information on upcoming events and workshops, registration deadlines, teaching resources and guidance, pedagogical articles, and more.

Thank you for subscribing! We encourage you to share this newsletter and our sign-up form with any colleagues who may be interested in learning more about our services.

We look forward to continuing the conversation throughout the upcoming year!

Teaching Consultations Available for Fall 2023

Are you or an instructor you know looking to brush up on your teaching skills as we start a new academic year?

Center for Teaching staff consult with individual faculty and TAs on teaching issues of all kinds, including help with presentation skills, ideas for engaging the class, dealing with challenging students, and developing teaching portfolios.

AI Tools and Teaching

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) is having a dramatic impact on teaching and learning within higher education.

The Center for Teaching (CfT) and the Office of Teaching, Learning, and Technology (OTLT) have compiled resources to help instructors adapt to the evolving role of AI in the classroom. These include guidance on how to incorporate AI tools into assignments, recommendations for developing AI-resistant assessments, and tips on maintaining academic integrity.

CfT and OTLT will also begin convening an AI in Teaching Community of Practice that will meet monthly to explore the implications of generative AI, such as ChatGPT, in higher education. Members will discuss ideas and practices related to generative AI in the classroom. The application deadline for instructors interested in participating is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1.

Faculty Communities

Are you interested in learning more about grading practices and strategies around campus? Would you like to do research on your own teaching? Are you seeking peer feedback on course assignments? Join a Faculty Learning Community (FLC) or Community of Practice (CoP) to explore these topics and more!

You can learn more about current communities and apply online.
