Center for Teaching Newsletter: September 2023

Supporting excellence in teaching and learning at Iowa

Welcome to the second edition of the Center for Teaching Newsletter!

In celebration of this new monthly tradition, we are thrilled to share that we have updated our bios to provide deeper insight into the team that is here to support you.

As experts in the scholarship of teaching and learning, facilitators, and experienced college instructors, the Center for Teaching staff uses research and theory to design and lead programs that center excellence in teaching and learning. As scholar-practitioners in the field of educational development, we work with individuals, programs and departments, colleges, and university-wide. Have a question or an idea? Need a thought partner? Get in touch with us!

  • Request a sparkshop, workshop, or workshop series: Center for Teaching staff partner with colleges, departments, and units to offer tailored programming by request. Contact us at teaching@uiowa.edu.
  • Request a one-on-one consultation: Need a thought partner for a teaching idea or challenge? Center for Teaching staff consult on course design, student motivation, inclusive pedagogy, assignments, grading, teaching statements, student feedback, active learning, and more. Contact us at teaching@uiowa.edu.

Whether you are a seasoned educator or just starting on your teaching journey, we are here to help. Our team has expertise on active learning, course design, curriculum design, scholarship of teaching & learning (SoTL), assignment and assessment design, DEI pedagogies, TA development and mentorship of TAs, early-career faculty development, and more.

Our goal is to support both individual instructors and shape a higher education landscape in which they can thrive. We hope you’ll join us in working to build a culture that not just recognizes but celebrates teaching excellence.

We invite you to share this newsletter with someone and encourage them to sign-up to get in on the conversation

Asking Students for Feedback

Do you ever find yourself wondering how well your teaching approach is landing with your students? You're not alone – it's a common thing that every educator has experienced at some point.

That is why gathering student feedback is such a powerful tool. It not only helps you to fine-tune your approach in the classroom but also gives students a stake in their learning journey, promoting success on both ends.

In chapter 23 of the Handbook for Teaching Excellence, we delve into practical, easy-to-implement strategies for collecting student feedback. Discover simple yet effective methods like anonymous surveys or the “rose-thorn-bud” activity to open up a dialogue with your students, helping you understand what’s working and what might need an adjustment.
