Applications open for the Course Design Institute, plus upcoming events, a new course design resource, and the second edition of our staff spotlight

Center for Teaching Newsletter: March 2025

Supporting excellence in teaching and learning at Iowa

Thank you for reading the Center for Teaching newsletter! This month’s edition features calls for applications for several Center for Teaching programs, information about our upcoming Writing Teaching Narratives event, and the third edition of our Staff Spotlight series.

We are excited to announce that applications are now open for the 2025–2026 Graduate Teaching Fellows program. This year-long, paid opportunity allows participants to enhance their teaching skills within a cross-disciplinary learning community led by Center for Teaching staff. Fellows will develop personalized goals and action plans for future employment, deepen their knowledge of the scholarship of teaching and learning, and create and facilitate a campus-wide interactive workshop or pedagogical project. In our feature story for this month, past fellows shared what they enjoyed about the program and details on how it prepared them for their careers.

For those seeking a shorter-term commitment, consider applying to become a New TA Orientation (NTAO) Graduate Student Facilitator. We will be hiring graduate students with at least two semesters of UI teaching experience to lead workshop sessions at the New TA Orientation on August 21, 2025. This role offers a valuable opportunity to develop leadership skills and contribute to the professional development of new teaching assistants.

We encourage all interested graduate students to explore these opportunities to enhance their teaching practice and contribute to our academic community.

Apply for the Scholarly Teaching Program

The Center for Teaching is now accepting applications for the Scholarly Teaching Program's Fall 2025 cohort! This interdisciplinary learning community helps teaching-focused faculty explore evidence-based teaching practices, engage in cross-disciplinary discussions, and attend a national teaching conference. Applications are due by April 21, 2025.

SoTL Scholars Program

The SoTL Scholars Program supports faculty in conducting Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) projects to systematically explore and enhance student learning. Applications are now open for the second cohort of faculty who will receive funding and expert guidance to design, implement, and share their research while engaging with a faculty learning community and national SoTL experts.

Writing Effective Teaching Narratives

Join the Center for Teaching and Office of the Provost for this faculty workshop on Wednesday, April 2, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Participants will assess their teaching statements, identify gaps and opportunities for documenting their teaching, and discuss strategies for gathering evidence of successful teaching practice.
