University of Iowa Health Care: Changing Medicine. Changing Lives.

Colleagues,

Severe storms are expected to affect our area this afternoon. A tornado watch has been issued for Johnson County until 8 p.m. tonight. Damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes are possible between now and 8 p.m.

When dangerous weather is anticipated, it is important to pay attention to the forecast and take all weather watches and warnings seriously.

Because this is the first severe weather event of the year, we encourage you to use good judgment, avoid traveling during active weather warnings, and be mindful of your surroundings.

How to stay informed

A Hawk Alert will be issued—and the weather sirens will sound—when there is a tornado warning or a severe thunderstorm warning that includes winds of 70 MPH or greater and/or hail measuring 1.75 inches or greater issued for our area. During a Hawk Alert, you can find updates at emergency.uiowa.edu. Additional information and resources are available on The Loop.

You can view the most current information on the forecast via the National Weather Service.

Getting to and from work safely

When such storms are forecast, first and foremost, we are concerned for the safety of our team during their travels to and from work. We urge you to anticipate difficulties in transportation to and from areas affected by the storm and actively communicate with your supervisors or other department authorities regarding your timeliness and attendance in order to ensure proper staffing.

CAMBUS: If sirens are sounded in Johnson County for a National Weather Service-issued severe thunderstorm warning or tornado warning for Johnson County, CAMBUS service will stop until the severe weather warning issued expires. CAMBUS announces service modifications and disruptions on the CAMBUS severe weather policy page.

Hotel accommodations: If necessary, UI Health Care employees have access to reduced rates at local hotels during inclement weather. A list of these offerings is available on The Point. Employees may also dial 319-384-5000 to request assistance with finding accommodations within UI Hospitals & Clinics, however, availability may be limited.

Thank you for all you do to support the mission of UI Health Care.
