Dr. Isabelle Denry to Retire from the College of Dentistry

After a remarkable and fruitful 34-year academic career, the last decade of which was at Iowa, Dr. Isabelle Denry will be retiring from Iowa on May 3, 2021. Denry’s excellence as a scientist, as reflected in her recent IADR Distinguished Scientist Award, will be felt for years to come at the College of Dentistry. The State of Iowa and the College of Dentistry Celebrate Prosthodontics Week

For the past six years, the Department of Prosthodontics has celebrated National Prosthodontics Awareness week by recruiting six low-income veterans to receive a free, complete set of dentures. To commemorate this annual event and in recognition of National Prosthodontics Awareness Week, Governor Kim Reynolds declared April 5-9 Iowa Prosthodontics Awareness Week. Sukirth Ganesan

Dr. Sukirth Ganesan on SARS-CoV-2 Infection of the Oral Cavity and Saliva

In Practice Update, Dr. Sukirth Ganesan, assistant professor in periodontics, discussed the practical significance of a recent study on SARS-CoV-2 for clinicians. The study was the first to show that SARS-CoV-2 could infect and replicate in the oral cavity, and could explain why some patients with COVID-19 present with oral manifestations, including loss of taste, dry mouth, and oral blistering.

Ahmed Mahrous and Amira Elgreatly "Revolutionizing Dental Education: VR, Gamification, and 3-D Models at 2021 ADEA Conference

Drs. Mahrous and Elgreatly Lead Digital Technologies Session at ADEA

Dr. Ahmed Mahrous, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, and Dr. Amira Elgreatly, assistant professor in the Department of Operative Dentistry, have been consistently breaking new ground regarding the use of new digital technologies in dental education. Their work shows how digital technology and techniques can replace physical objects, like teeth, models, and so forth. Such an approach gives greater flexibility and availability for dental education, and this research has resulted in numerous publications over the last several years, and it has become especially important during the pandemic. Dr. Mahrous and Dr. Elgreatly presented their novel work in a full session at the ADEA 2021 Annual Session.
