For almost a decade, Dr. Julie Holloway has been the head of the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and she will be retiring on May 3. In addition to leadership of her department, she has also served as president of the American Academy of Fixed Prosthodontics and Carl O. Boucher Prosthodontic Conference and been a model of excellence in research and in educating and mentoring advanced prosthodontics students. The American Association of Orthodontists Foundation awarded Dr. Shankar Rengasamy Venugopalan, associate professor in orthodontics, and Dr. Huojun Cao, assistant professor in Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, a $30K grant for their project, “The Analyses and Validation of Super-enhancers in Craniofacial Microsomia Associated Genomic Region.” The project is aimed at understanding the genetic causes of craniofacial microsomia. Congratulations to the Class of 2021 on their upcoming graduation and their recent commitment to organized dentistry during the IDA National Signing Day event last week! To date, 80 percent of the class has participated in this year's annual event. Of those students:
- Nearly one fourth will be entering residency programs.
- More than one third plan to practice out of state - as far as Alaska and Hawaii.
- 40 percent will stake their roots in Iowa.

Dr. Erica Teixeira, associate professor and chair in the Department of Operative Dentistry, was named as fellow for the 2021-2022 Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program. In a highly competitive year for applications, Dr. Teixeira was selected because she was among the very best and brightest of today’s and tomorrow’s women leaders in academic medicine, dentistry, public health as indicated in her nomination, letters of recommendation from her colleagues, and her institutional support. Sundes Elfagih passed her MS Defense on 4/16/21. The title of the thesis was “Dentin Bond Strength of a Dental Adhesive System Containing Proanthocyanidin-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles," and her mentor was Dr. Cristina De Mattos Pimenta Vidal, assistant professor in operative dentistry.
