Welcome to the University of Iowa Science Alliance Pathfinders!

We are so happy that you have signed up to be a Science Pathfinder!  Throughout the year we will be inviting you to seminars and events for undergraduate students interested in research!  You will also be receiving copies of the Iowa Sciences Academy Newsletter that will keep you up-to-date on what is happening on campus and additional opportunities within the research community. 

As an Pathfinder you will have the opportunity to connect with a network of faculty, graduate students, post-docs (Science Allies), and the Science Alliance Peer Leaders.  You are also eligible to participate as a Peer Mentee in our Peer Mentoring program and apply for the Science Alliance Internship program.

You are qualified to apply for the Science Alliance Internship Program

The program aims to enrich the undergraduate experience through coursework, mentor matching, career guidance, and creating a cohort of students with similar interests in science and research. Lab wages of $12/hour and access to a summer program for Science Alliance Interns will be provided (summer participation is not required).  Incoming Freshman typically start lab experiences their second semester in this program.  

We encourage students interested in the Science Alliance Internship program to enroll in IBA:1041:0006 Exploring Research Course.  This course starts October 6th and meets every Tues and Thursday from 10:30-11:20am.  This is NOT a required course but we recommend it if it fits into your schedule this Fall.

Open House at UCC Today

If you are free anytime between 1-3pm today (August 16th) stop by our booth at the UCC Open House (2nd Floor of the Old Capital Mall).  Grab some free popcorn and stop by if you have any questions about getting more involved with research on campus!

 

Exploring Research Course

Exploring Research Course - This 1 credit seminar course is designed to provide undergraduate students with context as they navigate a science major and the vast scientific research community at the University of Iowa.  The following questions will be explored:  What draws you to science? Is it curiosity? A desire to solve problems? What approaches do researchers use to investigate scientific questions and address global challenges? How is foundational knowledge acquired in introductory biology, chemistry and math classes applied to answer scientific questions?  What can a student at the University of Iowa do to explore their interest in scientific research? What are different pathways one can take towards a career in science?
