A Note for Pediatric Investigators | Dear Pediatric Investigators,
We will no longer require an internal Department of Pediatrics checklist form for grant submissions. All requests for external funding require the UI Routing Form, with approvals by the PI, Dept. Chair and Dean, with due dates as per DSP and sponsor.
- Note that salary support on grants should be discussed and approved by your division director or Chair. Grants that requires department cost share or protected time need to be approved in writing by the Chair.
- Required signatures or letters should be obtained at least 5 business days in advance of DSP and sponsor deadlines.
Please consult with Pediatrics Research Support staff to ensure timely submission of your proposals.

It commemorates the creation of the world. It marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection, repentance, and seeking forgiveness that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah is celebrated for 1 or 2 days, depending on one’s level of observance, and spent eating with family and friends and attending synagogue services. Taschlich services in the afternoon are usually held outdoors, by a running body of water for congregants to “cast their sins” into the moving water. Customary greetings include Happy New Year, and L’Shana Tova (to a good year). Yom Kippur is a very solemn holiday, spent fasting and praying, with a “break-the-fast” meal with community after the last services at sunset.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the 2 “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion, and the holiest, most significant holidays of the year. Like all other Jewish holidays, they begin at sunset the evening before, and end at sunset.
Sukkot begins 5 days after Yom Kippur and lasts for a a week. It celebrates the fall harvest, which also commemorates the time when the Hebrews lived in the Sinai wilderness on their way to the Promised Land. We celebrate by dining in foliage-covered booths (called Sukkah). This is followed by Simchat Torah, with services in the morning and evening, commemorating the end and beginning of the annual Torah reading cycle.
Ever wonder why Jewish holidays seem to fall on different dates every year? That’s because they correspond to the Lunar vs. Gregorian (solar) calendar. In 2021, Hanukkah begins at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Congratulations, Nielsen family! | | Staff Spotlight: Ron Lund Ron Lund, Onboarding and Credentialing Coordinator in the Human Resources office, joined the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics in August. "I specifically aid in credentialing and compliance for faculty across all departments. Ultimately, I am here to ensure a positive and effective onboarding experience for providers. Formerly, I was employed in revenue in the specialty pharmaceutical division with an emphasis on neurology and psychiatric conditions."
Ron's career is very important to him, "but I realize that I have to take time to recreate as well. To help me transition from a busy day at the office to down time, I spend a couple of hours each evening reviewing spreadsheets, journaling my ideas and reading trade publications... I also enjoy gourmet cooking, which helps me learn to focus on detailed instructions and procedures; this is very important in our line of work. Good food also helps me relax and stay healthy."
Ron's a positively-minded person who appreciates being able to make a positive impact on people -- every day. He enjoys working for here because, "UIHC makes time-saving and life-enriching health care outcomes that thousands of people use every day. I love to be part of a team that finds innovative ways to make health care more efficient and effective."
