ABA Business Law Section’s M&A Committee

The ABA Business Law Section’s M&A Committee is hosting its third annual MAC Cup M&A Negotiating Competition this fall (the MAC CUP III), an exciting opportunity to develop practical M&A drafting and negotiation skills, network with experienced professionals, and compete for prizes.

About the MAC Cup III:

  • Open to JD candidates from US and Canadian law schools
  • Teams of two (no prior M&A experience required)
  • Virtual qualifying rounds: October - November 2025
  • Semi-finals & finals (in-person): January 2026 in Laguna Beach, CA (travel covered for finalists)
  • Access to professional M&A training materials

Become a Student Ambassador! Applications for the 2025/26 Academic Year

Iowa Law Student Ambassadors work closely with the Offices of Admissions and Alumni Relations to  represent the law school to visitors, prospective students, and alumni. An ambassador’s primary functions are to help prospective students understand the benefits of attending the University of Iowa College of Law, 
recruit prospective students who are interested in attending, and engage with alumni about their experiences at the law school. Ambassadors demonstrate leadership, professionalism, responsibility,  enthusiasm, pride in the program, and the desire to promote the College of Law and the University of Iowa as 
an institution. 

Beyond meeting the basic qualifications for the position, applicants will be considered for their ability to  represent the College of Law across a variety of backgrounds, experiences, affinities, and interests.

Qualifications:

  • Iowa Law student returning for the 2025-2026 school year
  • Enrolled full-time, or part-time in conjunction with a joint degree program or externship.
  •  Excellent communication/public speaking skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to work occasional Saturday and evening events (1-2 weekend events per semester)

Compensation and Hours:

  • Student Ambassadors are paid hourly. The current rate of pay is $12.00 per hour.
  • The recruiting calendar is cyclical, with some weeks more demanding than others. Ambassadors can expect 
    to work between 1-10 hours per week, depending on their availability and the needs of Admissions.

Helix Bar Review Updates

The July 2025 Helix UBE, Helix California, and Helix Florida courses opened on March 10, giving bar studiers 20 full weeks of access ahead of the exam. As you begin to think about taking your bar exam, now is the time to enroll in Helix.

  • Students who are enrolled in a Helix comprehensive course or Helix MBE supplement can take advantage of our Pass Classes throughout the spring. These are available live and on-demand. During each three-hour session, students will receive an overview of a particular bar exam component, strategies for attacking the material, and practice opportunities.

Law360 Summer Associate Survey

You likely received an email from Law360 asking you to complete a survey about your experience during the recruiting process. Iowa Law knows how many requests you receive for surveys. This survey is important, especially right now, given the earlier and earlier recruiting timelines. If you can find the time, we do feel it will provide valuable insight from you, the students, the ones impacted the most by these new timelines. Cmiel and Weston funding for summer internships

The UI Center for Human Rights offers two sources of funding to support law students engaged in rights-related summer ex/internships.  The Weston ($2500 single recipient) and Cmiel (multiple awards) programs support travel, housing, and incidentals.  Informational sessions will be held on March 27 & April 2 (3:00-3:30 pm) via Zoom.  Registration for the info sessions, funding eligibility, and application requirements may be found here. The application deadline is April 18, 2025 (5:00 pm CST).

Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance Job Portal

The Georgia Intellectual Property Alliance (“GIPA”) has launched a new IP Career Portal to help law students, PhD students, science-based students, and IP associates find new positions in the intellectual property practice.Building on our success with the Southeastern Intellectual Property Job Fair, GIPA seeks to leverage our network of employers and higher education contacts to create a job board and portal that facilitates easy lateral movement among attorneys and patent agents.

Likewise, many job posts will be entry level positions for attorneys and patent agents.

Arizona Handbook

The Government Honors & Internship Handbook (for law students and graduates) and the Public Policy Handbook (for graduate and undergraduate students interested in public policy analysis and implementation) have been in publication since 2001 and 2005. The Handbooks provide students and graduates with resources to 475+ government agencies, think tanks, and advocacy groups, offering nearly 2,000 intern, fellowship, and post-graduate positions each year.

Public Defender Mentorship Program

The Iowa State Public Defender will offer a Monday Mentors program beginning at 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 or later if warranted.  It will take place every Monday thereafter at the same time and via the same zoom link provided below.  The idea is to provide a time for young public defenders, contract attorneys, and aspiring law students to ask questions whether related to a specific case, criminal defense in general, or career questions, and obtain feedback and guidance from others similarly situated and from defense attorneys with years of experience. Breakout rooms will be provided as needed to facilitate communication.  We hope you take advantage of this program. If you are interested in public defense, and cannot make the Monday meetings, please reach out to Kimberly DePalma at kdepalma@spd.state.ia.us.

Moodys Tax Law - Junior Associate

We are currently offering a position for a junior associate available in 2025. The ideal candidate will have a JD and/or LL.M in tax, or soon to be CPA, and some experience or classes taken in US international tax (but not mandatory). Recent graduates are welcome to apply. In addition, the ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual with an intense curiosity and a passion for learning. Current personal connections to Canada are considered helpful, such as permanent residency or Canadian citizenship, but if not, the firm provides immigration services for work statuses needed.

Summer 2025 Internship with Public Counsel’s Consumer Rights & Economic Justice Project

Are you passionate about fighting economic injustice, challenging systems of oppression, and using the law to create community-driven change? Public Counsel’s Consumer Rights & Economic Justice (CREJ) Project is still accepting applications for our Summer 2025 Internship Program. Public Counsel is a public interest law firm located in Los Angeles. We are dedicated to advancing civil rights and racial and economic justice through a powerful mix of direct services, policy advocacy, and impact litigation.

The internship is open to 1L and 2L law students only. This is a hands-on opportunity to gain litigation experience, connect with a community of consumer justice advocates, and develop lasting professional relationships.
