GAO Summer Associate Program

GAO’s Office of the General Counsel is looking for 2L (or equivalent) law students who expect to graduate in the spring of 2024 to participate in our 2023 Summer Associate program.  GAO (the Government Accountability Office) is an independent, nonpartisan legislative branch agency and is often referred to as the “congressional watchdog.” GAO advises Congress on ways to make the federal government more efficient and effective. GAO’s Office of the General Counsel employs about 180 attorneys who carry out a range of legal functions across a number of practice areas, specifically:  engagement counsel, appropriations law, procurement law, and in house counsel.

Summer Associates join us for 10-12 weeks and will have an opportunity to rotate through two teams in OGC, typically including one engagement counsel team and a decision-writing team (Appropriations Law, Procurement Law).  Each rotation is expected to result in a written product and to provide participants with opportunities to demonstrate their core legal skills, such as legal research, writing, and the oral presentation of legal content.  Our Summer Associates are exposed to the wide array of GAO’s legal work, not only through their rotations, but through a comprehensive training curriculum, shadowing opportunities, and office-wide events.  Participants may have the opportunity to be considered for a permanent attorney position after graduation.

For our 2023 Summer Associate program, students can apply by submitting a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript, and writing sample of up to 10 pages.  Application materials should be sent to legalcareers@gao.gov with the subject of the email “Summer Associate 2023”. If selected, the interviews will be conducted via videoconference.

Public Interest Fellowship (2023–2025)

Tycko & Zavareei LLP is now accepting applications for the 2023–2025 Tycko & Zavareei LLP Public Interest Fellowship (the “Fellowship”). The Fellowship, now in its 12th year, is designed for recent law school graduates who have a demonstrated commitment to a career in public interest law. The Firm will be conducting interviews of current 3L law students and current law clerks beginning in late September of 2022. The Fellowship will run for approximately two years, beginning in the fall of 2023. The Firm’s primary office is in Washington, DC, with secondary offices in Oakland, CA and Los Angeles, CA. For this Fellowship term, the Firm will be hiring two Fellows—one based in Washington, DC and one based in Oakland, CA.

The Fellows will be full-time employees of the Firm for the duration of the Fellowship. During that time, the Fellows will each have the opportunity to spend three months working directly for a public interest organization based in Washington, DC or California. Past Fellows have worked with the following well-established, highly respected non-profit organizations:

  • Tzedek DC (www.tzedekdc.org), whose mission is to “safeguard the legal rights of low-income DC residents dealing with often unjust, abusive, and illegal debt collection practices, as well as other consumer protection problems like credit reporting issues, identity theft, and predatory lending.”
  • Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (www.washlaw.org), which “has been on the front line of civil rights work for more than 50 years.” The firm’s past Fellows have gained vast knowledge and experience needed to help to promote human rights, fight for consumer justice, and develop important policy initiatives.

During the remainder of the Fellowship, the Fellows will work side-by-side with the Firm’s attorneys on cases aligned with its mission: protecting the public interest through significant, impactful litigation. The Firm's commitment to public interest work lends itself to a wide array of substantive areas, including consumer class action, whistleblower protection, defamation, First Amendment, and employee rights litigation. The Fellows will be exposed to a wide variety of cases, and will be given substantial responsibility.
