Welcome to Winter Break and Congratulations 1Ls on finishing your first semester of law school. We all hope you are enjoying your winter break and taking sometime to unplug from law school and reconnect with family and friends. As you take your much needed break, please do not forget Melissa Norman's "6 Things to Do Over Winter Break".

1.    Schedule a meeting with your Career Advisor.  
2.    Have the CSO review your resume and cover letter before applying to jobs. 
3.    Research Spring OCI employers and other employers that you find independently. 
4.    Apply to anything that looks interesting – keep track and follow up! 
5.    Network, network, network

Four law firms in Milwaukee are host a "Home for the Holidays" reception for 1L students who may be interested in practicing in Wisconsin post-graduation. This is a great opportunity for students to visit some of the top law firms in Milwaukee and network with attorneys in the area. Home for the Holidays Reception - Haynes and Boone, LLP - Charlotte, NC

Haynes and Boone, LLP cordially invites you to attend our 1L receptions while you are home for the holidays!  We will be hosting one reception in our Charlotte office on the date and times listed below.

Public Defender Mentorship Program

The Iowa State Public Defender will offer a Monday Mentors program beginning at 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 or later if warranted.  It will take place every Monday thereafter at the same time and via the same zoom link provided below.  The idea is to provide a time for young public defenders, contract attorneys, and aspiring law students to ask questions whether related to a specific case, criminal defense in general, or career questions, and obtain feedback and guidance from others similarly situated and from defense attorneys with years of experience. Breakout rooms will be provided as needed to facilitate communication.  We hope you take advantage of this program. If you are interested in public defense, and cannot make the Monday meetings, please reach out to Kimberly DePalma at kdepalma@spd.state.ia.us.

Goodwin | 1L Diversity Fellowship Program Application

Our 1L Diversity Fellowship program provides first-year law students with the opportunity to be a 1L summer associate in Goodwin’s 10-week summer program, following their first year of law school. Fellows will have the opportunity to spend their first six weeks working in their preferred Goodwin office and the final four weeks of the program working at the direction of a Goodwin client. Fellows will also be invited to participate in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s 1L Scholars Summit and be eligible to earn an offer to return to Goodwin for their 2L summer along with additional scholarship opportunities.

Our 1L Diversity Fellowship program application has officially launched on our website and will be open through February 2, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage students to apply as early as possible.
