2024 Equal Justice Works Law Student Training Series: Disaster Lawyering

This interactive course seeks to raise awareness of disaster legal work and inspire law students to engage in this work in their own communities both while in law school and beyond.

During this virtual two-hour course, law students will learn about the wide range of legal issues that routinely occur post-disaster and how a global pandemic concurrent with other events continues to shape disaster recovery. This course will demonstrate how lawyers strengthen community resilience and serve systems of justice by helping people prepare for disasters before an impact is felt within the community. Come learn what disaster lawyers do and how you can pursue a career in disaster law after graduation!

This free opportunity is available to all law students attending an Equal Justice Works member school. Students will receive a participation certificate upon completion of the course. Participants are expected to attend the entirety of the training.

2024 Loyola Patent Law Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of Law is hosting the 2024 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday and Friday, July 18-19.  This nationwide interview program targets patent law employers and rising 2L and 3L students. The 2024 Patent Law Interview Program Interviews will be held virtually.

Last year roughly 130 employers, 190 law schools, and nearly 1,000 law students from across the country participated in the program.  The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit application materials to apply to interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review their materials and select the students they wish to interview at the program. Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program is now open and closes on Wednesday, March 27.

Iowa Law - Public Interest Law Award and Foundation Grant Applications

The Public Interest Law Award was established in 1988 by the classes of 1987 and 1988 to honor and support law school graduates who choose to enter the field of public interest law. Eligible recipients must have more than $5,000 in student loan debt and demonstrate the procurement of employment in public interest law, an area that includes but is not limited to legal assistance groups, public defenders offices, special interest and minority group advocates, and civil liberties unions. The recipient's starting and projected average annual salary derived from the employment described above must be less than 125 percent of the "standard maintenance allowance (SMA)." Recipients are selected by a committee comprised of a member of the establishing class, faculty and staff. Applications are made the summer after graduation.

Public Interest Law Foundation Grant was established to encourage and support students engaged in public interest legal work, in 1995 the Iowa Law Foundation Board, at the recommendation of students and faculty, agreed that $20,000 of annual spendable earnings from non-restricted endowed scholarship accounts be awarded in the form of grants to 3-5 third-year students. The recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing public interest work and have substantial indebtedness from student loans. If a recipient of this grant does not procure employment in public interest work, the grant converts to a loan under the same terms of the Iowa Law School Foundation Loan program. A committee of faculty and staff selects recipients.
