Fellowships/Scholarship Opportunities

2022-2023 FASPE Law Fellowship

On October 21, 2021 at 3pm EST a virtual information session will be held for those interested in applying for the 2022 FASPE Law Fellowship. FASPE is an intensive, two-week study program in professional ethics and ethical leadership. FASPE is neither a Holocaust studies course, nor a genocide prevention program. Rather, the curriculum is designed to challenge Fellows to critically examine constructs, current developments and issues that raise ethical concerns in their professions in contemporary settings in which they work. The Fellowship is fully funded; and we will be awarding the 2022 FASPE Law Fellowship to between 12 and 16 applicants.

FASPE Law applicants must fit into one of the following three categories: 1) be enrolled in a JD or LLM program (or equivalent program); 2) be working in the legal profession (including a clerkship) at the time of their application and have received a JD or LLM between May 2020 and January 2022; or 3) be working as a trainee or similar position after having completed their requisite legal training in the applicable jurisdiction.

ISA Ventures Scout & Fellowship Programs

The venture capital industry in Iowa is a small one, with just a handful of funds and probably less than 100 consistently active angel investors. We’re aiming to change that. Additionally, in Iowa, the number of underrepresented founders who have raised over $1M can be counted on one hand. This is a problem that we also want to address. One way to get started is by bringing more diverse representation to the VC side of the table.

To make a dent in this, we’re launching 3 year-long Scout and Fellowship programs in 2022. These programs will give up to 8 highly qualified college students a unique opportunity to learn more about Venture Capital, sitting on this side of the table. They’ll be part of the entire venture process, and gain practical experience. This will prepare them to become a VC one day, or to start a company, or maybe to work with ISA Ventures right here in Iowa upon graduation.

The programs are each 12 months long and we have three tracks to choose from:

  • Venture Scouts are focused on identifying and evaluating potential investment opportunities on and around college campuses in Iowa and surrounding states.
  • Venture Fellows work intensively with our staff on selected deals, performing due diligence, modelling, and analysis of potential investments.
  • Venture Legal Fellows will work with our team on legal matters such as securities work, due diligence and compliance.

Applications for the Scout and Fellowship programs are open to college students in Iowa, with a specific focus on diverse candidates.

Opportunities of the Week

Summer 2022 Law Clerk - Office of the Chief Counsel for Trade Enforcement & Compliance

The Office of the Chief Counsel for Trade Enforcement & Compliance (CC-TEC) is the principal legal advisor to Enforcement & Compliance, an agency of the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce.  CC-TEC attorneys advise Enforcement and Compliance (E&C) regarding legal issues that arise during antidumping (unfair pricing) and countervailing duty (foreign government subsidization) administrative proceedings.  CC-TEC attorneys also defend E&C’s determinations before federal courts, NAFTA panels, and in WTO dispute settlement proceedings, as well as represent the interests of the United States as third-party intervenors in WTO disputes between other countries.  In addition, the office is involved in negotiating multilateral and bilateral trade agreements involving trade remedies.

Law clerks report to and work under the close supervision of both staff attorneys and senior counsel.  Assignments are coordinated in a manner that ensures the law clerks work with numerous CC-TEC attorneys and have exposure to a broad range of legal issues and tasks.  Completed work is reviewed by attorneys for research effectiveness, soundness of approach and legal argument, proper application of legal precepts, and consistency with instructions.  In the past, we have hired a number of our law clerks as staff attorneys.

CC-TEC is seeking rising third-year law students to serve as full-time law clerks for Summer 2022. We anticipate that one or more unpaid positions will be available.  The Department of Commerce is an equal opportunity employer, but can only hire United States citizens.  We will gladly assist with obtaining school externship credit for this experience. b. Interviews are conducted on a rolling basis, and positions are occasionally filled before the deadline.

How To Apply: please submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and an unofficial law school transcript from your law school’s registrar (self-prepared transcripts will not be accepted). Application materials should be sent electronically to Noma Ndlovu and Rachel Bogdan, Staff Attorneys at lawclerkhiring@trade.gov.

NOTE: In the subject line of the e-mail, please state “Summer 2022 Law Clerk Position.” E-mails that do not use this language may not be opened or considered in a timely manner.
