Fellowships and Mentorship Opportunities

2025 - 2027 Maine Justice Foundation's Frank M. Coffin Family Law Fellowship

For twenty-seven years, the Coffin Family Law Fellowship has played a pivotal role in ensuring access to justice in Maine. Named after Frank M. Coffin, Senior Judge on the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the Fellowship supports attorneys to provide legal representation in family law matters to clients who have qualified for pro bono assistance through the Volunteer Lawyers Project. Coffin Fellowship attorneys work for two years at Pine Tree Legal Assistance’s Portland office and cases are generally limited to Cumberland County. The starting salary will be $69,490 and a loan repayment assistance program is available for qualifying candidates.

Immigrant Justice Corp 2025 Fellowship

Each year IJC awards Justice Fellowships to recent law graduates from around the country – individuals with tremendous talent, promise, and a demonstrated commitment to providing legal services for low-income people and immigrants.

IJC trains Justice Fellows to become experts in immigration law and pairs them with leading non-profit legal services providers and community-based organizations. IJC matches selected Fellows with our partnering host organizations based on the applicant’s experience and interest, gaps in services within the community, location interests, and partnering host organizations’ needs. 

Justice Fellows represent immigrants in an array of immigration matters including:

  • Removal defense
  • Affirmative asylum applications
  • Relief available to juveniles and victims of crime, domestic violence, or human trafficking

Justice Fellow General Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants may be 3Ls or currently enrolled in an LLM program, graduating law school by the spring of 2025
  • Applicants must have graduated no earlier than Spring 2023
  • At the time of selection must have authorization to work in the United States for two years

Ford Foundation Fellowship in Nonprofit Law 

The Ford Foundation Fellowship in Nonprofit Law permits a Fellow each year to spend a year in residence at the Ford Foundation’s Office of Legal Services in New York, working with the General Counsel and staff of attorneys to provide legal advice on grantmaking, operations, governance, human resources, and investments.  The Fellow will also work closely with the foundation’s Grants Compliance department and engage with program and operations staff in New York and ten global offices on a variety of initiatives and special projects.

A Fellowship at the Ford Foundation will provide a recent law school graduate with exposure to an unusually wide variety of domestic and international legal issues encountered by private foundations operating globally.

McLean County Bar Association Scholarship 2024-2025

The McLean County Bar Association (MCBA) is announcing a $2,500 scholarship for eligible second or third year law school students with strong ties to and an expressed interest or intent to practice law in McLean County, Illinois. The MCBA reserves the right, in exceptional cases, to divide the scholarship equally between two candidates.      

Applicants for the MCBA Community Service law school scholarship should demonstrate a commitment to McLean County, Bloomington-Normal and/or its surrounding communities through residency in the county, through academic ties to local schools or through past or future employment. Prime candidates will express and demonstrate a commitment to legal aid work, pro bono activities and/or community service.

The recipient will be selected on or before November 23, 2024. A member of the MCBA will call and email the successful scholarship recipient shortly after November 23, 2024.  

National Center on Philanthropy and the Law (NCPL) Fellowship in Nonprofit Law

The NCPL Fellowship in Nonprofit Law permits one Fellow each year to spend a year in residence at a nonprofit organization. The 2025-2026 Fellow will work closely with senior staff and staff attorneys at Lawyers Alliance for New York (Lawyers Alliance) who have practice specialties that will expose the Fellow to a broad range of disciplines that address the legal needs of nonprofit organizations. Given the varied nature of the legal work performed by Lawyers Alliance and the diverse group of nonprofit organizations it represents, the NCPL Fellow will experience the widest possible exposure to representing nonprofit organizations on interesting and complex legal projects. These legal challenges will enable the NCPL Fellow to develop relevant skills to the maximum extent. Arizona Handbook

Public Defender Mentorship Program

The Iowa State Public Defender will offer a Monday Mentors program beginning at 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 or later if warranted.  It will take place every Monday thereafter at the same time and via the same zoom link provided below.  The idea is to provide a time for young public defenders, contract attorneys, and aspiring law students to ask questions whether related to a specific case, criminal defense in general, or career questions, and obtain feedback and guidance from others similarly situated and from defense attorneys with years of experience. Breakout rooms will be provided as needed to facilitate communication.  We hope you take advantage of this program. If you are interested in public defense, and cannot make the Monday meetings, please reach out to Kimberly DePalma at kdepalma@spd.state.ia.us.

Altshuler Berzon LLP - DOOR 2025 Summer Law Clerk Positions

Altshuler Berzon LLP is a San Francisco law firm dedicated to providing the highest quality representation in the service of economic justice and the public interest. Our attorneys represent clients including labor unions, workers, consumers, environmental groups, other public interest organizations, and public entities. We specialize in labor and employment, constitutional, environmental, civil rights, class action, campaign and election, and impact litigation, at both the trial and appellate levels. We represent clients before state and federal courts, administrative agencies, and arbitrators. We also provide advice and counseling, legislative drafting, representation in collective bargaining and negotiation, and other forms of legal assistance.

Our summer program is limited to 2Ls, as well as 3Ls who have secured post-graduation fall clerkships. 2025-2027 Barbara Ringer Honors Fellowship Program

The Barbara A. Ringer Copyright Honors Program (“Ringer Honors Program”) offers 18- to 24-month paid fellowships for attorneys in the initial stages of their careers who demonstrate exceptional ability and interest in copyright law (“Ringer Fellows”). Ringer Fellows work closely with senior attorneys and others in the Office of the General Counsel, the Office of Policy and International Affairs, the Office of the Register, and/or the Registration Program on a range of copyright-related law and policy matters. In addition to performing an important public service, Ringer Fellows acquire unparalleled insight into the U.S. copyright system to draw upon in their future careers.

The Ringer Honors Program is a distinguished public service opportunity for attorneys who have strong interest and a demonstrated record of academic or practical success in copyright law. The Program accepts applications from individuals who are in their final year at a U.S.-accredited law school or have graduated from such a law school (receiving a J.D. or LL.M.) within the five-year period preceding their application date. In addition to promising law students, judicial law clerks and those practicing at a law firm or in another setting are encouraged to apply. Although bar membership is not required for the position, Ringer Fellows must have been awarded a J.D. by the time they begin the fellowship. Please note that under applicable law, paid positions at the Copyright Office are ordinarily limited to U.S. citizens. The Office expects to appoint one or two Ringer Fellows each year.

How to Apply: A  candidate should email the following materials, combined into a single document file (in PDF format) that is labeled with the applicant's name and intended start date (for example, "Jane Smith Fall 2025") to ringerhonorsprogram@loc.gov:

  1. A statement of the candidate's interest in and qualifications for the Ringer Honors Program
