Updates to the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures

This message is intended for all campus contacts that receive program of study (POS) memo updates via email from the Office of the Registrar.

At the request of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and with approval from the Office of the Provost and Iowa Board of Regents, the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures will become the Department of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures, and Cultures (LLLC) on July 1, 2025. After this date, this MAUI department will administratively hold the following academic units:

  • American Sign Language
  • Arabic Language and Literature (formally a subdepartment of French and Italian)
  • Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures
  • English as a Second Language (formally a subdepartment of Linguistics)
  • French and Italian
  • German
  • International Studies
  • Linguistics
  • Russian (formally a subdepartment of Asian and Slavic Languages & Literatures)
  • Swahili (formally a subdepartment of French and Italian)

Related programs of study and course subjects will remain with their academic units under LLLC except for the CL course subject which will be inactivated once it is removed from existing courses.

Spanish and Portuguese

Spanish and Portuguese will become a standalone department in CLAS and Latin American Studies will become a subdepartment of Spanish and Portuguese on July 1. Related programs of study and course subjects will follow their academic units.

The following programs of study will be ended, effective fall 2025. No students should be admitted after the summer 2025 session. 

 

Academic Unit Closures

The following academic units will be inactivated after July 1. There are no active programs of study or course subjects associated with these academic units except for Second Language Acquisition, which are being ended.

  • French (a subdepartment of French and Italian)
  • Italian (a subdepartment of French and Italian)
  • Portuguese (a subdepartment of Spanish and Portuguese)
  • Spanish (a subdepartment of Spanish and Portuguese)
  • Second Language Acquisition (a department in the Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures)
