New School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability

This message is intended for all campus contacts that receive program of study (POS) memo updates via email from the Office of the Registrar.

At the request of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and with approval from the Office of the Provost and Iowa Board of Regents, the School of Earth, Environment, and Sustainability (SEES) will be active on July 1, 2025. This new MAUI department will administratively hold the following academic units:

  • Earth and Environmental Sciences
  • Geographical and Sustainability Sciences
  • Sustainability Program

Please continue reading for more information on impacted programs and update your records accordingly. The linked MAUI program of study page(s) provides more documentation of this change. 

Environmental Sciences

The academic unit of Environmental Sciences will be inactivated on July 1. The following programs of study will be ended, effective fall 2025. Students can finish their program or move to new programs created in Earth and Environmental Sciences (outlined further in this email). No new students should be admitted after the summer 2025 session.

Earth and Environmental Sciences

The following new programs of study will be active fall 2025. Students can migrate from one of the ended Environmental Science programs listed above. 

The following programs of study will be ended, effective fall 2025. No students should be admitted after the summer 2025 session. 

Other related programs of study will follow Earth and Environmental Sciences to SEES. 

Sustainability Program

This academic unit is housed in University College and will be moved to SEES on July 1. The Certificate in Sustainability with University College will end and a new certificate in CLAS will be active fall 2025. Current students in this certificate will migrate from the program in University College to the new program in CLAS.
