Hello students!

You are receiving this newsletter because you have used My Career Path in your academic career. Here are some exciting testimonials and updates on what’s new in My Career Path.

What’s new on My Career Path?

My Career Path is always expanding to give students more activities to aid them in their academic and career pursuits. The platform currently houses various self-paced ICON modules to give students resources on different career topics. My Career Path is pleased to launch new career modules for Spring of 2025!

Use “All Activities” and filter for “Career Modules” to explore:

  • Internship Search (Now Live!):

Students learn 4 methods for sourcing or creating internships and have 3 action items to choose from to start their search (organize their search, research an opportunity, and/or connect with an intern).  Content is delivered via short videos from Career Center staff, resource links, as well as example templates.

  • Networking (Now Live!):

Students will explore the importance of networking, strategies for building meaningful connections, and real examples of successful networking. With engaging content—including videos, a podcast, and an interactive application activity—this module brings networking concepts to life and equips students for real-world networking opportunities.

  • Cover Letters (Coming soon!):

Students will learn how to develop a cover letter and reflect upon their experiences to write a letter that connects their skills and knowledge to a job posting.

  • Student Employment (Coming soon!):

In Module 1, students will learn the basics of student employment including how to set up a Handshake account and apply for on campus jobs. Content includes perceptions vs. reality of working on campus, as well as a review of the diverse employment options at UI.

In Module 2, students will explore how on-campus jobs provide benefit candidates in the job or graduate school search. Students will identify transferable skills learned on the job and translate their experiences to their resumes. Content focuses on exceeding expectations and setting oneself apart as a top 10% employee.

Headshot of Meredith Arnold

Meet Meredith!

Meredith Arnold is a sophomore from Le Mars, Iowa studying Finance and Management. Check out her what she has to say about her experience using My Career Path!

Here are her notes:

  • “When you first begin on the My Career Path website, you take a small quiz that assesses where you are in your journey to find your career. Although I have been set on getting a career in business, I appreciated that I was able to select multiple interests.”
  • “As someone who is extremely goal oriented and likes to have a list of things to do throughout the process of completing a goal, I specifically appreciated the Action-Oriented Timelines provided for the interests.”
  • “Another great aspect of My Career Path is that it provides legitimate resources for jobs, internships, and volunteering. In addition, it also promotes student organizations and clubs on campus that align with your career path so that you can connect with students that have similar goals and aspirations.”
  • “For students who like to see their progress or be held accountable throughout their career search, the My Progress page is perfect. This page shows activity completion by milestones.”
  • “Finally, there are plenty of resources that consistently provide students with the assurance that they are not alone.”

Where are they now?

Headshot of Cassidy

Meet Cassidy! She works in Human Resources and graduated from the University of Iowa in May 2022. Learn more about her career path and what advice she has for college students!

Q: What were your areas of study at the University of Iowa?
Her Answer: I graduated with a degree in Marketing from Tippie School of Business and a certificate in Event Management.

Q: What is your current position?
Her Answer: I am an HR Coordinator at a CPA firm. My day-to-day tasks include onboarding, end-of-year reviews, compliance, compensation reviews, and being a resource for any questions people have about payroll, benefits, etc.

Q: For students wanting to go into the HR field, what are some important things to know?
Her Answer: As the first-person employees interact with at a company, you naturally become someone they interact with daily. Creating an open space, especially in HR, and getting to know people on a personal level is crucial.

Q: What are some key qualities you look for when hiring new team members?
Her Answer: I look for confidence and soft skills in interviews. It’s important for candidates to be able to admit if they don’t know the answer and show a willingness to learn. Having a goal, specific skills you want to gain, and knowing where you want to grow from there are also important.

Q: What advice would you give students in college right now?
Her Answer: Pomerantz Career Center offers so many opportunities to develop your skills! When you enter your first job, say yes to as much as you can to get to know people and be a face people know in the office.
