Course Offering Workshop Policies

This message is being sent to all academic departmental and collegiate administrators on campus.

New for summer 2023

We have updated our course offering policies for workshops following a review by the Office of the Provost. The duration of time a workshop can be offered has been expanded and is now more flexible, better matching the current needs of our practicing professionals. Workshops must meet between the standard UI start and end dates of the given academic calendar to be approved. No more than 3 s.h. of credit may be earned for a workshop, regardless of its duration or the number of meeting times.

Updated workshop definition

In contrast with university classes, workshops are targeted to the needs of practicing professionals, such as teachers, social workers, musicians, and others. Course content is focused on providing practical skills that can be immediately used in a professional setting. The majority of enrolled students are non-degree seeking, although some degree-seeking students may enroll.

Restrictions:

  • The duration of a workshop must meet or fall between the dates of the UI start and end dates of the given academic calendar
  • No more than 1 s.h. of credit may be earned by the student for each week the workshop is held; no more than 3 s.h. of credit may be earned for a workshop, regardless of length
  • Workshop offerings must use different course numbers than course offerings, except for special topics or special studies listings with subtitles

NOTE: Tuition for workshop courses is assessed separately and billed in addition to tuition and fees for other courses. See Common and University/Program Specific Fees on the Office of the Registrar website.

Workshop management type

  • Effective summer 2023, all in-person or hybrid workshop courses should be created using the new Academic Unit Workshop (WORKSHOPUNIT) management type. These workshop courses must follow the section numbering sequencing of 0001, 0002, etc.
  • There is no change to online workshops. These continue to be identified as Distance and Online Workshop (WORKSHOPCCP) management type with 0WK* section numbers.
  • The Office of the Registrar will adjust any approved in-person or hybrid offerings for summer 2023 or future semesters, if applicable, to expedite this new process in display of management type and section numbers. If there are changes to dates, time/day, or location for these approved workshop offerings, please submit a revise workflow slip for processing.
  • The On Campus Workshop (WORKSHOPSE) management type will be inactivated in MAUI.  Going forward, all in-person/hybrid workshops will be identified as an Academic Unit Workshop to reduce confusion in course planning.
