Hello Hawkeyes!

As we approach Fall Break, you might already be thinking ahead to spring and summer career opportunities. You probably hear the word “internship” tossed around a lot, but what does this mean and why is having one important? Read on for all things internship related and learn how we can assist you in your search for a variety of experiences outside the classroom!

What's an internship and why should you get one?

Internships can be found throughout the year – fall, spring, and summer all provide internship possibilities! More and more employers are also listing remote internships which could be a perfect fit, especially during the school year. Also remember that an experience doesn’t have to be labeled an “internship” for it to have value – lab and research student jobs, field work, course practicums, and campus employment connected to your career interests are all meaningful and rewarding experiences that provide similar benefits to an internship.

An internship is your opportunity to:

  1. Test-drive a potential occupation
  2. Develop professional connections
  3. Gain related career experience and skills
  4. Apply classroom knowledge in the real world
  5. Strengthen your resume for full-time employment or graduate school

Rachel's Working World Experience

Q: What skills have you gained from the position?

A: First and foremost, I developed an incredible sense of independence and confidence in the work that I produce. I was given free reign to explore how my personal style and creativity could fit in with Iowa PBS and benefit the company. This new skill came in handy, particularly when my supervisor got sick right before the Iowa State Fair, and I had to take on some of her tasks and try new things without her guidance. Most importantly, however, this internship gave me some great working world experience. I learned how to communicate effectively with coworkers and be part of a team in a professional setting.
