How has being a LS certificate student helped you grow as a student and/or personally?
In every experience I take part in I always hope to advance and pursue higher opportunities that will build upon my previous foundation and character. I never want to take advantage of any opportunity I am blessed with; instead, I want to use opportunities to grow myself as a person, student, and future employee. The Leadership Certificate is one of these opportunities that I will not take for granted. This certificate has created a new way of thinking for me. There are many ways that leadership can grow a person but, | in my experience, it specifically helps with service. I have always had a passion for student-based leadership in service. And the certificate allowed my passion to grow even further. I love volunteering and disclosing my past experiences, good or bad, to help others on their path. One example of my student-based leadership in service is volunteering on Fridays at Hawkeye Visit Days. I speak to possible future Hawkeyes and their families about the decision-making and process of college. This is where I put my leadership skills to use. I am transparent and vulnerable with these families, in which I speak about my mistakes and successes in hopes they excel.
What is your favorite LS class you’ve taken?
My personal favorite Leadership class I have taken so far has to be the very first class I took in this certificate, Introduction to Leadership. This class was the hook, line, and sinker for me. It presented me with a nontypical class routine. Introduction to Leadership was not focused on drilling information into students that they would need to memorize and regurgitate on an exam. Instead, this class taught me and my peers real-life leadership skills. We learned what makes a good leader and how to be one ourselves. We did various reflections over this course where we evaluated ourselves which I think is an underappreciated idea. Evaluating yourself and how you are doing is huge as a leader because if you can’t trust yourself and be accountable for yourself how can you ask anyone else to trust and rely on you. This class paved the way of how to be a leader not only to others but yourself as well.
