Student Awards at the Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of the AADR

On Friday, February 7, undergraduate students, dental students, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers competed for research awards for their presentations at the Annual Meeting of the Iowa Section of the AADR. The DentaQuest Foundation Continues Partnership Public Policy Center

Dr. Julie Reynolds and Dr. Pete Damiano have been awarded $115K to continue their project, "The Patient-Centered Dental Home: Development and dissemination of metrics for measurement and accountability.” The goal for the award is to continue to develop the Patient-Centered Dental Home model and quality measurement framework. Drs. Pete Damiano and Julie Reynolds are co-PIs, and Dr. Susan McKernan is a co-investigator on the project team.

Pediatric Dentistry Student Group Participates in Recent Girl Scout STEM Event

The pediatric dentistry student group interacted with children at a recent Girl Scouts STEM event on February 4 at the MERF building. The dental exhibit featured an interactive beverage display where participants arranged nine beverages in ascending order of sugar content. The participants were also asked to match amounts of sugar to each of the nine beverages. Attendees enjoyed the event, and the dental student volunteers included David Rosenthal, Nathan Goodson Gregg, Shelby Rozhart, Alex Hsieh, and Kali Disterhoft.

Drs. John Hellstein and Steven Levy Serve As CODA Commissioners

Both Dr. Hellstein and Dr. Levy are serving terms as commissioners for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and as chairs of committees in their area of expertise. CODA is the national organization responsible for establishing educational standards to monitor the quality and improvement for all dental programs in the United States.

Winning Logo for SCDA Logo Competition

Dr. Vinaya Kundapur Wins National Logo Contest for the Special Care Dentistry Association

The Special Care Dentistry Association (SCDA) held a competition to select a new logo for the organization. Dr. Vinaya Kundapur, a geriatric and special needs fellow in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, submitted the winning logo. Dr. Kanika Manchanda, national student liaison for the SCDA, said, "All of the board members loved [Dr. Kundapur's] design and are looking forward to incorporating it into the national chapter." The competition comes with a $500 prize that can help offset costs associated with attending the 2020 SCDA in San Diego.

Future Iowa Pre-Dental Students Start 'Flour Power'

Two future Iowa students, Ellie Ernster and Molly O'Neill, from Sioux City started a new cookie company called "Flour Power" as part of a high school class project. Both Ellie and Mollie plan to become dentists, and they see cookie design as a small way to prepare: "People say that dentistry is where art and medicine meet," [Molly] said. "There's plenty of detail work required when you're working on teeth."
