From getting your white coats to graduation, after four years, the Class of 2020 has done it! While we won't be able to have an in-person commencement, we want to celebrate the Class of 2020 and their accomplishments during our virtual commencement. We are asking our students to (1) Put on your regalia, (2) Create a :10 video about your classmates or your dental education. Submit the videos via direct Facebook messages. We plan to use them as part of our virtual commencement celebration. To be considered for the virtual commencement, we need to receive the videos by May 15.

Many have been posting senior pictures to celebrate the Class of 2020, and we want to celebrate our graduates too. We are asking faculty and staff (and family members of graduates) to help us do that. Please consider submitting a video (:10 seconds or less) to us via direct Facebook message with words of encouragement and praise for our students. All submissions will be considered for a video that is being created for our college’s virtual commencement ceremony. Please have your submission to us by May 15.

Over the past year, the Hispanic Student Dental Association and second-year dental student Melanie Stoss have been helping dental students and staff learn relevant terms and phrases for practicing dentistry with Spanish-speaking patients. Those in-person meetings are on hold for now, but Melanie is still working to keep the enthusiasm for the classes going via videos and making resources available as we practice remote learning and social distancing.

As the university has substantially reduced its operations, several College of Dentistry employees have already made themselves available for reassignment to high-need areas. We are proud to say that College of Dentistry employees have received numerous compliments regarding their work ethic and professionalism as they help in other areas. Talinda Pettigrew from UI Human Resources said, "Please thank them again for the flexibility and willingness to support the University."

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to move our Iowa Dental Reviews (Last Chance) CE course up to Friday, April 24, and to an online format to help dental professionals who may not be working during the current situation. This 7-hour CE course will now be held via Zoom, with the same schedule, and the cost is $5 for EVERYONE.

Since the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a rapidly changing environment at the College of Dentistry, the college has been sending regular email updates on new information. Through it all, our priority is the safety of our patients, students, providers, faculty, and staff. These updates are summarized on the College of Dentistry website.
