Employment Opportunity: Bean Learning Community Faculty Co-Director
The Carver College of Medicine is seeking applications for a faculty co-director for the Bean Learning Community, to begin on or about September 1, 2024. The individual selected for this position must have an M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., or MPAS and hold a current or emeritus faculty appointment in the CCOM. The position will require a commitment of 10% effort in exchange for salary support from the College (10% salary plus fringe). The initial appointment is generally four years, to be reviewed at the end of the first year. If mutually satisfactory, the position can be renewed for an additional term.
The Community Faculty Directors share the management and coordination of the activities of the assigned student learning community with the Learning Community/Curriculum Manager under the direction of the Deans for Student Affairs and Curriculum. Each student learning community is comprised of approximately 160 medical and physician assistant students and is housed in the Medical Education Research Facility. The learning community concept organizationally combines student affairs and curriculum management for enhanced student learning, involvement, and support. The primary emphases of the learning communities are to include the development of peer-to-peer support, outreach and service learning activities in the local community.
Faculty Directors provide leadership for one of the four student learning communities and need to be available a minimum of four hours per week. Shared office space within the learning communities in MERF will be provided. They collaborate with student leaders, community coordinators and other faculty and staff to develop, implement, evaluate, and maintain that community's philanthropic, educational, and social activities. They meet with M1 students during the first semester to ease transition issues and to help foster retention; will meet with M2 and M3 students to plan events, and assist M4s in the residency application and Matching process. They will assist the OSAC Deans in the preparation of Medical Student Performance Evaluations (MSPEs) and will help with the resolution of student-related issues and serve as a liaison to student support services (financial aid, academic support, student counseling).
