Fall 2022 Textbook Ordering Compliance

Textbook and Resource Ordering and Compliance

The following email is being sent to all Academic Departmental Administrators (ADA) and Department Executive Officers (DEOs) listed in each department. Please disregard this email if you are listed as an ADA, but don't serve in a role that works with textbooks or resources. A similar email is being sent to primary instructors and course supervisors.

Ordering and Compliance Details

Textbook and resource orders must be placed through the Iowa Hawk Shop, ICON Direct, or the ISBA Law Bookstore to meet Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) compliance.

Duplicate orders may be placed at local bookstores (such as Iowa Book or Prairie Lights). However, ordering only from Iowa Book or Prairie Lights will not meet HEOA compliance. Textbooks and resource orders through these stores will not be shown in MAUI or MyUI.  Instead, utilize the course syllabus if you wish to provide information about alternative locations where students can purchase textbooks and resources.

Refrain from using the Other Resources and Additional Information field within MAUI to order textbooks and resources as the Iowa Hawk Shop can't retrieve the data.

Iowa Hawk Shop

The Iowa Hawk Shop is the primary source for all textbook and resource listings. The Iowa Hawk Shop utilizes Follett Discover for textbook and resource orders from departmental administrators and instructors.

ICON Direct

ICON Direct is the university’s initiative for delivering required digital content to students and faculty through their ICON course sites at a special discounted cost. Please do not duplicate orders between ICON Direct and the Iowa Hawk Shop.

Alternative Ways to Meet Compliance

Upcoming Fall 2022 Deadline

The final deadline to order textbooks and resources for the fall semester is Monday, July 25, 2022.

Compliance and Policy

HEOA requires that book titles, ISBN numbers, and prices of required and recommended books and other materials for any course are included on the institution's electronic schedule of courses in time for student registration.

As a reminder, textbook orders are not replicated and thus require a new order to be placed each semester.

Learn more about textbook compliance and policy here.

Ways to Check Compliance

There are several resources available to help manage and identify course sections which require action to meet HEOA compliance.

MAUI - Recommended for Departmental Administrators

These areas will show up-to-date information on textbook compliance.
