Deadline to Submit Comments on MNRA Ends March 14

In June 2024, the university announced a review of the Macbride Nature Recreation Area (MNRA) as part of a standard process for regularly evaluating programming and centers. MNRA hosts UI WILD programs, including the Iowa Raptor Project, Iowa Wildlife Camps, and School of the Wild, as well as numerous Lifetime Leisure Skills program classes.  The goal of such reviews is to ensure fiscal sustainability and consistency with the university’s mission of excellent education and research opportunities for a broad array of students.

The recreation spot, located north of Iowa City near Lake Macbride State Park, is owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The corps doesn’t charge the university rent, but the university is responsible for maintaining all landscape, structures, and roads on the 485-acre natural area. The university has leased the MNRA from the Corps of Engineers since the early 1960s, with the current agreement extending through July 1, 2029.

Campus members can submit input regarding the MNRA review by March 14 at this email address: MNRA-feedback@uiowa.edu

New Wastewater Solution Poised to Meet Federal Regulations

University of Iowa Civil Engineering Professor Craig Just has worked with wastewater and treatment solutions for over 30 years. His most recent project, a small-scale wastewater treatment solution, is currently being evaluated against federal regulations. In Iowa, the majority of this water is treated at large wastewater plants or in big lagoons. The university recently announced a pilot system that could deeply impact how small-town Iowa gets its water. If it does, hundreds of small towns across Iowa will be able to use this technology for their wastewater.

Alliant CEO: Cedar Rapids Data Centers Will Help Enable Five-Year Rate Freeze

The advent of several large-scale industrial projects in Cedar Rapids, including two data center developments, has helped Alliant Energy establish reliable, sustainable energy generation – and a five-year freeze on electrical rates, according to Alliant CEO Lisa Barton.

“We have invested a tremendous amount here with this robust transmission network and diverse mix of energy resources,” Ms. Barton said in her keynote address to an estimated 974 attendees at the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance’s annual meeting Jan. 28 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cedar Rapids Convention Complex.
