FERPA Compliance Training for Student Employees

You are receiving this email because you are currently listed as a student employee supervisor or HR representative.

The University of Iowa is updating FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) compliance standards to enhance data privacy and educational record management for students.

Starting Jan. 14, all University of Iowa student employees who may interact with or work with other students and/or student records will be required to complete FERPA training every three years. Previously, FERPA training was a one-time requirement.

Student employees who haven’t completed the training within the last three years, or who are new to these requirements, will be notified on Jan.14, 2025, that they must complete their FERPA training within 60 days. Those who have completed FERPA training within the last three years will be required to retake it three years from their most recent completion date.

The training is short, and most people complete it within 20 minutes. The new training cycle will also help UI student employees stay current with best practices and federal requirements. Supervisors may be notified via email if employees do not complete FERPA training or if their compliance is past due. Contact ui-ferpa@uiowa.edu if you have questions.

Thank you for sharing this update with your student employees and for your ongoing commitment to protecting student privacy at Iowa.
