Effective Fall 2019, the University of Iowa is making a change to the way in which faculty and instructors record failing grades (F, U, or N). If instructors record a failing grade, they will need to indicate if the student "completed the course, never attended or stopped attending". If the student attended any day, turned in an assignment, met any academic activity or completed any syllabus activity then the student does not meet the definition of "never attended". If instructors select "stopped attending", instructors will need to indicate a last date of attendance.
It is critical to be accurate when listing the last date of attendance, as this will impact the dollar amount of financial aid the student will be required to pay back.
The Office of Student Financial Aid does not want to cancel aid for students who are participating in academic activity but whose instructors did not verify this activity. If a student participates in only one activity they should be reported as attending, even if this doesn't meet the course expectations.
Attendance Definitions can be found on the final grade entry page or the Grade Entry Attendance Page on the Office of the Registrar website.
