Request for Updated General Catalog Photos

You are receiving this message because you were an initiator for at least one 2024–25 General Catalog page. Please feel free to share this message with others in your workflow path(s) but we request that the initiator submit all photos and the additional requested details.

Thank you to all who have submitted new photos! If you have already submitted new photos, you may disregard this message.

In June 2023, the General Catalog received a branding update to align with other University of Iowa websites. As part of this update, the photograph size for our pages changed.

We are asking departments to send new catalog page images to align with our new size requirements. This is also an excellent opportunity to ensure department and program landing pages have a different image than their associated programs of study for greater usability.

Please send any questions to registrar-publications@uiowa.edu. We thank you for supporting the latest upgrade to the catalog!

Due Date

Please submit new photos by Friday, June 14, 2024. Programs with existing images that do not fit the new size guidelines and that opt not to update their images may have a new image chosen from the University of Iowa Photoshelter for the 2025–26 General Catalog editing cycle.

Tips for Good Alt Text

The following information is from Accessibility@IOWA.

  • Make sure ALT text adequately conveys the content and purpose of any images you include.
  • Keep the description concise: not more than 140 characters.
  • Avoid using terms like “Picture of…” or “Image of…”; assistive technologies will provide that information to the end user.

Using Images to Create a Welcoming and Inclusive Environment

The University of Iowa does not offer any specific guidance related to the use of photos to create a welcoming and inclusive environment. However, the following resource may be useful.

University Photographers’ Association of American Inclusive and Diverse Photography. Key notes from this resource:

  • Authenticity is paramount when representing inclusion and diversity in photography.
  • Represent diversity beyond skin color.
  • Avoid stereotyping and misidentification.
  • Broaden diverse representations beyond students.
  • Services and spaces can demonstrate inclusion.
  • Photography that is representative without over-selling is a key component in inclusion and diversity.
  • Images used in context and in a timely manner signal ongoing attention to inclusion and diversity.
