The Hardin Pulse, Spring 2023

The Hardin Pulse | Spring 2023

Message from the Director

Janna Lawrence, MLIS, AHIP, FMLA
Director, Hardin Library for the Health Sciences

Good news! Remodeled (and much improved) restrooms are available on the third and fourth floors, near the elevators. Work continues on the first and second floor restrooms and work on the 24-hour-study restrooms has begun. Currently, what was previously the men’s restroom in the 24-hour study has been modified to serve as a single-user gender-neutral restroom, while the previous women’s restroom is remodeled to be a true single-user gender-neutral restroom. When it is completed, the previous men’s restroom will be remodeled in the same way. This means that, even during construction, there should always be a restroom available for users of the 24-hour study.

Work on the fourth floor to refresh the individual studies as well as the open study areas also continues. As part of this, print books published before 2010 have been moved to the Library Annex, where they can be easily and quickly retrieved (see Where are the books?).

We’ll share news about potential next steps for the fourth floor when possible. In the meantime, please continue to watch the Hardin Library blog for updates and feel free to contact me at janna-lawrence@uiowa.edu if you have questions or concerns.

Hardin Highlight

Name: Mark Onken

Your role at Hardin: I am the Evening and Sunday Supervisor at Hardin Library, supervising 1-2 student employees each evening and Sunday. I am the reserve supervisor, handling approximately two hundred course reserves in the health sciences each semester, as well as maintaining the permanent reserve collection. I am responsible for searching for and finding books and other materials reported as missing. I also serve at the third-floor reference desk five to ten hours per week, as well as monitor the desk at night when the desk is staffed by a student employee. I guess you could say I am a “jack of all trades, master of none.”

Years you've worked in a library and years you've worked at Hardin: Except for one year I worked at a bookstore, I have been working in either public or academic libraries continuously since 1999. I have worked at Hardin Library since June 2007.

One thing you enjoy about working at Hardin: I think my favorite part of working in a library is helping patrons and instructors with their needs. Sometimes I will help a patron find a journal article or government document, or I will help an instructor place a textbook on course reserve for their students, and the joy they experience when they have their problem solved is very satisfying.

A fun fact about yourself: I am a huge movie buff. I have probably watched thousands of classic movies over the years – romances, westerns, action-adventure, and foreign language. There are few things I love more than popping in a DVD (or firing up the Roku), popping some popcorn, and settling down for a good movie.

Where are the books?

As construction continues at Hardin, books in our general collection published before 2010 are being moved to our storage facility to make room for more study space on the fourth floor. These books are still available to you! If a book in Infohawk+ indicates a location of “Library Annex” or has a date that is earlier than 2010, just log in with your HawkID by clicking Sign in to view request options, located in the yellow bar in the book’s record, then click Request Physical Item. You will be able to choose whether to pick the book up at Hardin or another UI library or to have it delivered to your office or home (with some restrictions).  We will then retrieve the book for you. If we are unable for any reason to retrieve our own copy of the item, we will request the item through our interlibrary loan department and get it from another library.

Questions?  Feel free to contact us at lib-hardin@uiowa.edu or 319-335-9151.

New Enrichment Collection

Leisure reading has been shown to improve critical thinking skills, improve writing skills, and lead to higher academic achievement. Reading for pleasure also decreases stress, increases self-awareness, and broadens perspective. A study published in the journal Medical Education asked medical students about their reading habits. Lack of access to reading materials was one of the primary reasons why students did not read more. With this in mind, Hardin Library has started a small collection for stimulating the mind and enriching perspectives. The collection contains healthcare-related biographies, histories, fiction, and graphic medicine that we hope will provide a mental break from coursework and academic research. The print collection is shelved next to our reserve collection and you can find additional materials online at: https://guides.lib.uiowa.edu/StimulatingReads

Rare Book Room Open House

Join us on May 3, 2023, from 3:00-7:00 for the annual John Martin Rare Book Room Open House with featured speaker Greta Nettleton. The open house will run from 3:00-6:00 and highlight historical works on women's health and those by or about women practitioners, including new acquisitions.

Ms. Nettleton, the author of The Quack's Daughter: A True Story About the Private Life of a Victorian College Girl, published by the University of Iowa Press in 2014, will speak from 6:00-7:00 about THE GREAT FORGETTING: The Prominent Role of Women in 19th-century Midwestern Medicine. Her talk will dig into the history of the University of Iowa College of Medicine, the first fully co-educational medical school in the nation, and the hidden history of its first female graduates.

Dog Day Afternoon

Last semester Therapy Dogs of Johnson County brought two therapy dogs with their human handlers to Hardin Library for a two-hour visit. Approximately 40 people came to interact, cuddle, and play with the dogs. Keep an eye out for announcements about future therapy dog visits!

Find Your Librarian

Hardin Librarian liaisons provide an educational link between the library and the health sciences campus by teaching library education sessions for groups or individuals. We can help you with literature searching. We can meet with you in person or via email, Zoom, chat, or phone about any of your information needs!

Interlibrary Loan

Did you know that Hardin Library operates its own interlibrary loan (ILL) service? ILL is a service for UI affiliates that provides free access to material either not in the UI collections or not immediately accessible in electronic format. Additionally, Hardin ILL staff use a specialized tool designed to locate articles in the health sciences. The number of requests is not limited. All you need is your HawkID and password.
