Tips to keep your room cool

Dear Hawkeye,

The 2024-25 school year is coming in hot! Outside temperatures are predicted to exceed 90F/30C from Sunday into next week. To keep your rooms comfortable and avoid heat- and humidity-related issues, we need everyone to take the following actions:

  • Close your drapes on windows receiving direct sunlight to prevent heat gain.
  • Make sure windows are shut and locked.
  • Do NOT set your thermostat lower than 69 degrees. Setting temps lower may not allow for proper de-humidification and may cause other issues.
  • Minimize time with doors open. Hallways are not air-conditioned. Reminder: if you see any external doors propped open, please close them as it is a safety concern.

The mandatory On Iowa events on Sunday will be outside, first on the east side of the Pentacrest for the convocation and Block I photo from 4-5 p.m., then at the north end of Clinton Street for the President's Block Party from 5-6:30 p.m. The market places will not be open for dinner Sunday evening, to encourage everyone to attend the block party.

Please take care of yourself and others during this time, be sure to drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen, and take breaks from the sun.
