It's service learning week at the Honors Program! Throughout this week the Honors Program will be highlighting various service learning and volunteer opportunities, so be sure to check out our Instagram for fun highlights, stories, and takeovers! Friday, December 4th @ 5 PM join us for letter writing to Melrose Meadows Retirement Community. Honors students in partnership with Student United Way will write letters via Zoom.

Announcements and Opportunities

Earn Experiential Learning Credit for Teaching Roles

The Honors Program will consider Honors students serving in teaching roles—e.g., as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Learning Assistants (LAs)—as being engaged in teaching internships. If students wish to earn experiential learning credit they should complete the honors internship reflection assignment. This assignment consists of a pre-experience questionnaire, a post-experience questionnaire, and a narrative and is accessible on the Honors Program website

Apply to Work at the Honors Program

Employment applications for the 2021-2022 academic year are now open! Honors student staff are an integral part of the program, and we want you to the join the team. Applications are open for various positions such as Student Admins, Honors Peer Mentors, and opportunities to work with the Honors Newsletter and Publications. Apply here before the 2nd of February 2021.

 

Accepting Applications for the 2021 Washington Leadership Program

The Washington Leadership Program (WLP) is now accepting applications from high-potential South Asian American college students for an eight week summer leadership program. Students will gain a firsthand view of policy-making and legislative process, and gain access to high-profile South-Asian leaders in the nation's capital. Apply here by January 10, 2021.

New Honors Class for Spring 2021!

Honors Program Associate Director Dr. Emily Hill will be teaching a class next spring on High Ability College Students and Wellness. This 2 s.h. class will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:30 – 1:20 PM via synchronous zoom sessions. There will be a focus on mental health, touching on various areas such as impostor syndrome, existential depression, and the intersectionality of giftedness, mental health, gender, and race. Congratulations Marissa Mueller!

Honors Student Marissa Mueller has been named as one of Canada's eleven Rhodes Scholar Elects for 2021! Marissa will graduate in May with a degree in biomedical engineering. She is the 22nd UI student to receive the honor, and the second woman. Beginning in fall 2021, she will spend two years studying stem cells and regenerative engineering at the University of Oxford in England. Read the full press release and a Q&A with Marissa here.

Lunch & Learn Recap: All About Bees

On Tuesday, November 10th, Honors Students were buzzing with interest in entomology. Addison Woll, Honors Assessment Manager & Admissions Coordinator, shared his expertise and knowledge about hymenoptera, or bees, wasps, and ants at an Honors Lunch & Learn.
