Greetings from the Commencement Team!

We are currently looking for enthusiastic members of the university community to assist with the spring 2024 College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Volunteering at these events is a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating students. 

Please note that Office of the Registrar staff also have the option to assist with commencement processes between ceremonies on May 11 and/or tear down tasks on May 12. Your help is essential and very much appreciated!

To sign up, please complete and submit the form below by Friday, April 5, 2024. See below for a brief overview of the various available tasks, dates, and times.

  • Indicate your preferred tasks and times on the form.
  • Fill out the “Additional Comments” section, if we should be aware of any special accommodations or extenuating circumstances. Your preferences will be considered when scheduling volunteers.

You should receive a confirmation message with your ceremony and task information the last week of April.

CLAS Ceremonies

A.M. Undergraduate Ceremony

Saturday, May 11, 9 a.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
This ceremony recognizes students from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Volunteer time commitment: 7:40 a.m.–9:20 a.m. 

P.M. Undergraduate Ceremony

Saturday, May 11, 1 p.m. at Carver-Hawkeye Arena
This ceremony recognizes students from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and University College. Volunteer time commitment: 11:40 a.m.–1:20 p.m.

Task Descriptions

Concourse (Graduate/Guest Entry) Level 

Wayfinder
Volunteers stationed near venue entrances will have venue maps and assist graduates and guests with finding their way to seating areas. 

Floor (Graduate Seating) Level 

Card Hand-Out
Volunteers at the card hand-out areas help graduates find their name cards, or, in some cases, have graduates fill out a name card.  

Honors and Distinction
Volunteers assist students who have questions about honors and distinction and monitor the graduates’ overflow seating area.

Usher
Volunteers stationed at each card hand-out area will direct graduates to take a seat in their suggested seating block after they have picked up their name card.

Seating Area Reset or Name Card Organization
Saturday, May 11, approximate time commitment is 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Venue Tear Down
Sunday, May 12, approximate time commitment is noon–2 p.m.

Training 

Training sessions will be held via Zoom the week of commencement. More information will be provided closer to the meeting dates. Volunteers are encouraged to attend a training session even if you have helped in the past.
