Director, Office of Undergraduate Research | | | | The Graduate College and the Office of Undergraduate Research will sponsor the 19th annual Summer Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29th, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. This conference provides an opportunity for undergraduate students who have been conducting summer research projects in departments and programs across the university to showcase their work.

For any questions, please contact OUR-Summer-Conf@uiowa.edu. | | | This summer, ICRU Fellow Christina Yu is researching the emergence and development of sleep-related ocular activity—specifically rapid eye movements (REMs) and changes in pupillary size—in infant rats. So far, she has found that changes in pupillary size reflect changes in arousal states as young as postnatal (P) day 12 while REMs emerge as a state-dependent behavior between P8 and P12. Yu and her fellow researchers hope to explore the significance of the results as the project continues. | | | | Congratulations to ICRU Summer Fellow Ivy Hamilton, who worked with Hailey Dixon and Dr. Mercedes Bern-Klug, professor of social work, on a research project that culminated in the publication of "Older Adults See Room for Improvement in How CMS Communicates About the Poorest Performing Nursing Homes, the Special Focus Facilities," in the May–June 2026 issue in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work. | | | ICRU Fellow Aishani Kundu, a rising fourth-year double majoring in psychology and English and creative writing, has been named a recipient of the Peace, Charlie One World Scholarship. The scholarship, a distinguished award dedicated to supporting undergraduate international students, aims “to promote world peace, understanding, compassion, and harmony among different ethnic and cultural groups through higher education.” Congratulations, Aishani! | | | |
