2020-21 Highlights from the Latina/o/x Studies Program | We are pleased to share 2020-21 highlights from the Latina/o/x Studies Program at the University of Iowa. Through another challenging academic year which was heavily impacted by COVID-19, Latina/o/x students and faculty were recognized for their achievement and engagement both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Dr. Rene Rocha, Director of the Latina/o/x Studies Program, co-hosted (with Dr. Ariana Ruiz and Dr. Darrel Wanzer-Serrano) the closing conference for the Mellon Foundation-funded Sawyer Seminar, "Imagining Latinidades: Articulations of National Belonging."
- AY 2020-21 was the inaugural year of Unidos, the first U Iowa residence hall Living Learning Community whose mission is to "welcome all Latinx-identifying students and those who seek to learn and engage more in the cultural background." The Latina/o/x Studies Program provided the required course for community members, LATS:1000 Exploring Latina/o/x Studies, which was taught by Jorge Guerra.
- The Latina/o/x Studies minor continues to attract students from a variety of majors, including Speech and Hearing Science, Global Health Studies, Marketing, Spanish, Ethics and Public Policy, English and Creative Writing and more!
- There were 69 declared Latina/o/x/ Studies minors in 2020-21. 17 of those students graduated with the minor during the academic year.
