Alumni Newsletter: University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics
 |
|
Welcome
Stead Family Department of Pediatrics alumni,
Welcome to the first issue of what will become a quarterly newsletter discussing the studies, discoveries, education, and patient care administered through our department's staff and providers. As a department, our goal is to collaborate across all functions of research, education, and patient care to eradicate childhood illnesses.
With a rich history dating back to 1870, this department has a lot of stories to tell, starting with the few we've selected to share with you today. We invite you to join us in conversation on Twitter, follow us on LinkedIn, and share this newsletter with your colleagues to help connect people to the work that we're doing at University of Iowa Health Care.
In the next few weeks, many of you will receive a ballot in Doximity to participate in the next “Best Hospitals” and “Best Children’s Hospitals” surveys by U.S. News & World Report, which recognizes hospitals that offer patients the most comprehensive and advanced treatments available. We value our partnerships with children's hospitals in all subspecialties around the country. Together, we continue to explore new discoveries in our laboratories and accelerate bringing those advancements to patients. If you receive a survey, please support the University of Iowa by voting for UI Hospitals & Clinics or UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital in any of our sub-specialties. Thank you for your consideration, as we know your institution is likely requesting the same.
We're sending this newsletter to you because you have been a part of our great and storied history. Thank you for your contribution to our department, our hospitals, and our missions. We look forward to continuing the conversation.
Sincerely,

Alexander G. Bassuk, MD, PhD (he/him/they) Professor and Chair | UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Joel and Jay Stead Chair for Leadership in Children's Medicine | Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Physician-in-Chief | UI Stead Family Children's Hospital

When Aliye Uc, MD (95R, 97F), formed INSPPIRE [INternational Study Group of Pediatric Pancreatitis: In search for a cuRE] in 2009, she had a straightforward goal: “Our mission was to improve the lives of children and their families,” says Uc, a pediatric gastroenterologist at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. “We wanted to find therapies for pediatric pancreatitis.” Since then, Uc has become a world-renowned pediatric gastroenterologist, and INSPPIRE has created the first and most comprehensive natural history study of the disorder.

With the receipt of a four-year, $1.3M R38 grant from the NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), trainees in the Department of Internal Medicine and of the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics have access to a new program for developing their research experience. The R38, also known as the Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR), funds the training of residents who want a relatively short-term immersion in research.

Everyone expects their pregnancy to go smoothly, so few people can imagine that their baby will be born too early or will have complications needing immediate care. In rural areas, where the closest neonatal intensive care unit may be more than a hundred miles away, having a premature baby is exceptionally frightening when minutes matter most. Thankfully, families in Iowa can rest easy knowing when the unimaginable does happen, they now have improved access to the state’s only Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital through a newly expanded neonatal medical transport service. This is especially important in rural areas where many smaller hospitals no longer have the equipment or staff to deliver even full-term babies.

One in six children are diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), such as autism and attention-deficit disorder, and more than 1.5% of the population is diagnosed across the lifespan, into adolescence and adulthood—an especially common trend in rural areas. As the number of IDD diagnoses increases, University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) and the Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI) are joining forces with other researchers, clinicians, physicians, and scientists across the UI enterprise to form a new center aimed at advancing care for Iowans with IDDs. The center will be funded over 5 years by a $6.2 million dollar grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Celebrating Five Years of the Stead Family Children's Hospital
The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital has been a part of our enterprise since 1919, but we opened this thoughtfully designed and engineered building on February 24, 2017. This month, we celebrate five years in this building, from which our inpatients have experienced thousands of waves from our neighboring Kinnick Stadium. Learn more about the hospital here.
