1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network

1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network is now accepting new faculty and staff mentors. You can join this exciting, campus-wide network of support for first-generation students!

Though this mentor network is not structured for formal programming, it is focused on first-gen undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who want to connect with UI faculty and staff who can help them on their college journey and serve in an informal mentoring capacity.

This mentoring and advocacy opportunity does not assign mentors to mentees. Instead, the 1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network serves as a way to connect first-gen students who have questions with faculty and staff who have answers. While not all mentors will be contacted by a student, mentors may receive periodic communications from the 1stGen@Iowa Mentor Network office that will provide you with important information and announcements.

Mentors who wish to join for the spring 2024 must do so by Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR)

Multiple dates available beginning Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. via Zoom

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a program designed to educate people from all walks of life on how to recognize the warning signs of suicide. QPR helps people get comfortable asking the question, "Are you thinking about suicide?" and then helping people get appropriate help. QPR is designed for all 'gatekeepers'. A gatekeeper, according to the Surgeon General's National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (2001), is anyone who is able to recognize when someone is in a crisis and may be contemplating suicide. QPR does not require participants to become crisis counselors but will increase their understanding of resources.
