ChatGPT with KR Drake from New York University

Wednesday, May 22 | 1–2 p.m.

In April, several of our colleagues were able to attend AACARO in Columbus, Ohio. Many attended a session focused on using ChatGPT, an AI tool. Those who attended said it changed their perception of the tool, how to utilize it, and how to communicate about it. People walked away thinking of AI like a graphing calculator - of course, people can do it by hand, but if it isn't necessary to do it by hand, why not utilize the time and energy savings to support productivity in our work?

Please join us as KR Drake from New York University shares his ChatGPT presentation!

Registrar's Office Microsoft Copilot Training

Thursday, June 6 | 10–11:30 a.m.

Manda Marshall, Senior ITS Consultant with AI Productivity Solutions, will be helping us learn about Microsoft Copilot. There are several other trainings available to learn about this new AI-integrated technology; however, Manda has agreed to customize a session for our office.

The training will be an overview of the basic tool, context use cases, and capabilities in different applications. She will also give us information on different browsers and bring awareness to things we might not know about our preferred browsers.

The presentation itself will be scheduled for an hour with an additional 30 minutes held for questions. This engagement opportunity might not take the entire time; we are also planning to record the session for those who may need to miss it live.

Herky on Parade

Starting at the beginning of May, the beloved Herky made his appearance across Johnson County in 100 different forms and a new pose.

Herky on Parade is celebrating Herky’s 75th birthday with 100 new statues for all to enjoy. Those who saw in 2004 and 2014 experienced the tremendous success of the largest public art project Iowa has ever produced.

These new Herky statues will be on display through August. Following the parade, select Herkys will be auctioned off to support a fund to send area kids to camp…be it art camp, sports camp, or otherwise.

Volunteer with Houses to Homes

Houses into Homes provides gently-used beds, furniture, and household items for families and individuals in Johnson County who are exiting homelessness, domestic violence, and other crisis situations.

The Houses into Homes mission — to help people feel the comforts of home by providing a comfortable place to sleep, sit, and eat — is only possible with the support of volunteers! Below are a few of the ways you can volunteer to support this organization.

Delivery day volunteers donate time to help load the box trucks at the warehouse and unload items at the recipients' homes.

Warehouse work volunteers donate time to help with important warehouse projects. Learn more about ongoing warehouse projects.

Volunteer groups support pick-ups, deliveries, or warehouse projects. Learn more about volunteer groups.

AACRAO Hill Day

July 21–23 | Washington, DC

AACRAO Hill Day allows members to engage with congressional offices to discuss your work and share your perspective, as practitioners, on how policy impacts the work you do daily. AACRAO Advocates discuss the association's legislative priorities, including:

*Higher Education Act reauthorization policy priorities
*Support for the #DoublePell campaign
*Updates to FERPA
*Advancing reverse transfer practices
*Protecting Dreamers and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) recipients

Advocates also participate in online training in preparation for the meetings, including AACRAO's on-demand Federal Legislative Process and Advocacy 101 course. The course, which is open and free to all AACRAO members, provides a breakdown of the federal legislative process, helpful insights on how to set up and prepare for meetings with your representatives, and tools to help State & Regional organizations engage with both state and federal issues while remaining in federal compliance.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please connect with your supervisor. The application is open through Friday, May 24.
