Important Reminder on 2024 Public Access Policy Compliance
If your manuscript is the result of funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—in whole or in part—you are responsible for ensuring compliance with the 2024 Public Access Policy which became effective July 1, 2025.
To meet NIH expectations, authors should:
- Carefully review publishing agreements to ensure they do not conflict with NIH's rights.
- Refer to NIH Notice NOT-OD-25-049, which outlines the Government Use License and author responsibilities.
- Confirm that NIH retains the right to make the Author Accepted Manuscript (AAM) publicly available in PubMed Central upon the Official Date of Publication, without embargo or additional costs
NIH encourages authors to be transparent during the journal submission process and to include a statement in the submitted manuscript acknowledging NIH's right to make the AAM publicly available. NIH provides the following sample language that may be included in the Submitted Manuscript and then, should it be accepted, the Author Accepted Manuscript:
"This manuscript is the result of funding in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is subject to the NIH Public Access Policy. Through acceptance of this federal funding, NIH has been given a right to make this manuscript publicly available in PubMed Central upon the Official Date of Publication, as defined by NIH."
