Followup: Slater Hall pest control concerns

Dear Slater Residents,

On Monday, we sent a communication after a report of one mouse in a Slater Hall room. We are following up to share what actions we have taken to address concerns of pests in your residence hall. The entire building was inspected and treated by professional exterminators on Aug. 8, prior to student arrival.

During the past week in Slater Hall:

  • We received reports of, and responded to, four sightings of mice. Two additional requests for traps were made based on evidence of mice.
  • Two rooms have requested treatment for insects, which was completed.
  • On Wednesday, Aug. 23, exterminators were onsite at Slater re-applying treatment for cockroaches in public areas, placing mouse traps in Slater pipe chases, the dock, and exterior locations.
  • Our maintenance team has assisted with removing radiator covers to deploy mouse traps.
  • All exterior door sweeps (the seal at the base of a door) are getting checked and replaced if needed.
  • We have contacted an overhead door company to replace overhead dock door sweeps to ensure a tight seal around the building and eliminate entry points for pests.
  • We continue to monitor reports and work orders to direct treatment efforts and follow our contractor's expert guidance on pest control.

As a reminder: to report an issue with a pest, please complete a work order at the front desk. This allows for a comprehensive building response.  More information about work orders is available here: https://housing.uiowa.edu/fix-it.
