State of the Department Update
Stead Family Department of Pediatrics alumni,
In the past year, our department has faced adversity, yet we have thrived in all parts of our mission.
At this time last year, we had 34 fewer providers and support staff than we do today. We filled these new positions to increase our clinical excellence, and to grow our ability to undertake new research and apply new scientific findings to the care of our patients. And thanks to the efforts of staff and faculty, we achieved the second-highest yearly tally for NIH grants awarded to our department in the last seven years. This is a strong result, given the intense nationwide competition for federal research funding. In response to the record admissions to our NICU and PICU, and to our overall patient occupancy, we appointed an Associate Chief Medical Officer to focus on consistent standards of optimal care and efficiency in patient access to and throughout the inpatient experience. Our educational programs continue to thrive as well, welcoming more residents and fellows than ever, even as our personnel and faculty faced the challenge of remote interviews and recruitment. And throughout these growing pains, our faculty were recognized for excellence in their scholarly work and clinical care, as acknowledged by myriad notable awards from our enterprise, our Iowa City community, and our national and international partner institutions.
I invite you to explore the stories we've curated for you below, forward this newsletter to friends and colleagues, engage with us on social media, and say hello whenever you see us. We have so much to share, and so much to be grateful for. Thank you for your excellent work and support for the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics.
Sincerely,

Alexander G. Bassuk, MD, PhD (he/him/they) Professor and Chair | UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics Joel and Jay Stead Chair for Leadership in Children's Medicine | Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Physician-in-Chief | UI Stead Family Children's Hospital

Ted Abel, PhD, and Lane Strathearn, MBBS, PhD, are leading one of only 15 federally funded intellectual and developmental disabilities research centers in the country. The new Hawk-IDDRC [Hawkeye Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center] integrates the efforts of researchers in the Iowa Neuroscience Institute (INI) and clinicians in the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), part of University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, to connect basic and clinical research across the lifespan.

The traditional focus on the brain’s gray matter is beginning to change, thanks to exciting new research by UI investigators. “Neuroscience has always been super focused on the gray matter of the cerebral cortex,” says Aaron Boes (’09 MD, ’09 PhD), University of Iowa Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Neurology, and Psychiatry, and a member of the Iowa Neuroscience Institute. “It’s where neurons are firing, where changes to blood flow and metabolic activity happen while the brain is active. That’s where the field is drawn because neuroscientists see changes with functional imaging.” But as UI researchers Boes and Justin Reber, PhD, go on to explain to writer Jennifer Brown in Medicine Iowa, white matter may be just as important as gray matter for cognition.
