Drop/Withdrawal Policy Changes for Spring 2025

Important Update: Drop/Withdrawal Policy Changes for Spring 2025

This message is intended for advisors and collegiate administrators assisting students with the drop/withdrawal process.

We want to inform you about important updates to MAUI and MyUI, effective spring 2025, that will impact students who withdraw from the university. The updates align our policy with the Iowa Board of Regents refund schedule and policy, as well as ensure compliance with Federal Return of Title IV Funds (R2T4) requirements.

Key Changes

  1. Withdrawal Policy Update: If a student intends to withdraw from all courses, they must withdraw from all courses at the same time. Dropping all but one course to avoid a higher return of financial aid funds will no longer be allowed.
  2. Return of Title IV Funds: The Office of Student Financial Aid is required by law to determine the amount of aid students who withdraw are required to return. Students earn aid based on the amount of time they were enrolled for the semester and their enrollment intensity (e.g., number of courses, attendance). Any unearned federal and state aid must be returned to the respective U.S. or State Department of Education.
  3. Iowa Board of Regents Policy Alignment: These updates will ensure that our systems are aligned with the refund schedule and policy approved by the Iowa Board of Regents.

We recognize these updates may require adjustments in advising practices and culture. We are committed to providing support during this transition and beyond as we work to maintain the integrity of our academic and financial processes.
